Peelers

I need to vent.

I grew up peeling veggies with a good, old fashioned, cheap metal swivel peeler:

Somehow, over the last 20 years they have evolved to this:

Recently my fiancee replaced my old rusty peeler with one of these fancy perpendicular peelers. I hate the thing. It doesn't make any sense to me. Holding it doesn't feel natural to me. I take twice as long to peel a carrot now.

That is all.

she got the right brand (OXO-good grips) but the perpendicular peelers suck big time...see if you can replace it with this one. I can peel a carrot, cucumber, potato, etc... twice as fast with this as I did with my old one (the same as your first picture). Just be careful with the dual blades it is easy to take off a little skin as well.

I bought the old-fashioned kind a few years ago from a guy who makes them in his machine shop and sells them at craft fairs. It's freaking lethal. The blade is steel -- he probably just buys it -- but the handle is aluminum.

Well... I know for sure I hate 'perpendicular' model.

But it brings up another question... do I want swivel or no swivel? I've always used the swivel type, but I think I might prefer the stationary type. Hmm... so many options...

I too grew up with the old fashioned, no bells and whistle kind. Mine was getting a bit rusty so I tried to replace it a few times. I went with one like the one pictured, but hated it. Now we have 2 types from Pampered Chef and I love them both. They work well and I like them both. My old one wasn't really working how it should, so I didn't feel so bad replacing it. The two I have actually work better, dare I say!

I've always used the old fashioned kind. I really don't understand how you could use the perpendicular one.

SAW, the type you pictured it better for peeling hard to peel things like pumpkin or other squashes with a thick skin.

The Oxo good grips peeler made in the style of the old fashioned one is fantastic and you can get a replacement blade for it.

You can still find the old fashioned by but the quality is poor. The blade gets very dull after being used a few times. They are not made to last 30 years like my mom's peeler. That is a shame.

don't do a wedding registry at Pampered chef, their stuff is alright but you can get just as good or better at Bed Bath and Beyond or Macy's which you are probably going to register at anyways.

Roger, you are right the Oxo will peel off a layer of skin in a second. I have done that a couple of times too and cussed myself for doing it, lol.

Kyocera ceramic peelers are the best I have ever used. I like the Perfect Peeler with the adjustable angle head. The ceramic blades hold an edge a long time plus they won't rust or stain food.
