PDA wireless internet issues

I bought a HP iPAQ h5550 Pocket PC that comes with and intergrated 802.11b WLAN for using wireless internet. Well, at least in theory. I have been able to use the internet on it, but only when it is in its cradle and connected to the computer via USB.

When I take it off its cradle, the WLAN shows that it is connected to my home network (it even picks up a couple other networks, presumably from my neighbors), and the the signal strength is great, but I can't open any web pages in Pocket IE. I couldn't get it to function correctly on my work network, either, even though I'm positive I had the correct WEP key entered, since the IT guy was the one doing it.

Anyone have any experience with these? I would really like to have my wireless internet working before classes start on Tuesday.

Are you entering the WEP key as plain text or hex? Different companies use diffrent algorithms to generate their keys, so the same text password entered into your Pocket PC may generate a different hex key than your router. Either your wireless client utility or your router software should show you the hex key generated (the screen should show text like "Default Key" "Passphrase" & "Key 1" "Key 2") from the text password. Enter the hex key (Key 1 most likely) into your Pocket PC as your WEP password.

Hope this helps - I had the exact same problem with my Axim & this is what did the trick.

Thanks, that worked perfectly! I'm typing this response in my living room right now, nowhere near my pc or the cradle.

Now I can post on hornfans from class when I get bored.

Now you just have to fix that double post problem.
