PC video editing suite?

I'm looking for a good video editing suite for XP. Windows Movie Maker doesn't handle large MPEGs well, and I'd like a way to encode directly to multiple formats (DivX, MPEG, etc.) instead of just WMV. The cheap (i.e. crappy) copy of Cyberlink PowerDirector I picked up off eBay works ok for the most part, but it distorts the audio sometimes. Now I can afford something better, so I'm looking to move up.

I'm currently looking at Pinnacle Studio Pro 9, but if anyone knows of a better product within the same price range (up to about $120 or so) I'd be open to suggestions. Built-in DVD authoring would be a plus. I already have a capture card and capture software for that, so that's not very important.

Doesn't your gf's laptop have imovie on it? I heard it rocks!

I use Pinnacle, and it works fine, but if you don't have a lot of RAM and a lot of free space, you're going to get a lot of crashes while editing. If you plan on getting fancy with the editing, you'll also need more than just Studio 9; you'll need Hollywood FX Mega and maybe a couple of other programs, so the cost you're looking at now is around $200.

I talked with some people who have used Showbiz from Arcsoft and have been very happy with it. Cost is about $95.

zork: since the pc was relatively new and I didn't have much saved on it...I just backed it up and format/reloaded the system.

And what do you know? It works fine now...with the latest drivers/software as before...but it actually works now.
