Pay no attention to the Iowa Straw Poll

Iowa stealing the focus from New Hampshire just compounded the lunacy of the way the media covers the early presidential race. They cover it like a horse race and have successfully put that framework in everybody's mind.

Why should the decisions of people in Iowa or New Hampshire be predictors of what the voters in New York, Texas, California, and Ohio will do? Has anyone ever voted in those states thinking, "Well, this candidate did well in Iowa, I think I'll vote for him/her!"

Covering the whole thing like a horse race so the public begins to see it the same way is just one of the problems with the media and our elections. Another is the obsession with covering the behind the scenes campaigning while giving short shrift to actual issues.

Those two things and being played as gossip distributors pretty much disarms the mainstream media's part in the process.

But they're just part of the problem with this decaying Republic.

This is how its always been Roma. A victory in Iowa and New Hampshire is suppose to translate into front runner status. As you said, frontrunner for what? Iowa? New Hampshire?

Its a joke. What happens in Iowa shouldnt matter one iota to those in Texas or Florida or anywhere else. Each state is different, but the media does treat this as an actual race where winning one state somehow gives you an edge in every other state...

Its all about creating perception. Just like the FOX idiots keeping on saying that Romney is the front runner automatically and that Perry will become one just for entering the race. I dont understand what these front runner labels are based on. The idiots who bash Obamacare dont talk about how it is really Romneycare....

I know that Ron Paul doesnt look "presidential" but Im really starting to think that "looking presidential" means being looking like a smooth talking used car salesman. No, he doesnt come across that way.

Well, Americans need to stop voting for who the best actor is. If Perry becomes a front runner simply for having good hair, then David Hasselhoff or Fabio need to enter the race.

Maybe we should just find a good looking man with a British accent and have him run. Someone who went to Yale or Harvard wouldnt hurt either. That way at least they can say they have a great education. At least thats something that Perry cant say.

The president of the united states is nothing more than a popularity contest, and he has executive powers? Really? Yikes!

Pawlenty has his chance with ObamaRomney care and crapped his pants. He's done.

Cain, couldn't keep his Muslim rage under control, he's done.

Huntsman/Johnson never got started.

So basically, it's Mittens, Slick Rick and Michelle.

And, I really could care less what happens in Iowa. They are not a mirror of what the country needs. South Carolina is a better barometer, than Iowa/NH.

Ok no offense to Iowa.

Should this tradition go away with today's media channels?

Iowa does not represent me or the state of Texas. Why do we rely on a small n to represent the nation?

Brotha:

I still think that at least one of Palin, Christie, Ryan or Jindahl jumps into the race by Thanksgiving.

I think Christie or Ryan jumps to the front runner, while Palin would send earthquake like tremors through the entire race and Jindahl would be ho hum. I truly think they are all playing for 2016 or 2020.

Listening to Bachmann this morning on Meet the Press sounded like she was still trying to appeal to Iowa voters. Unfortunately Iowa is not the norm - as shown in above posts and previous Straw Poll results. The "Iowa message" doesn't really translate into popular winning candidate elsewhere in the U.S.

Hook'em!!!
