One of the greats, not many like him around anymore.

According to reports, Paul Newman, 83 and a former chain-smoker, has been diagnosed with terminal lung cancer

The acclaimed actor is said to have been diagnosed at New York’s Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, where he is currently receiving outpatient treatment and is under a leading New York oncologist's care. One of the few to know about Newman's illness is his "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" costar and good pal, Robert Redford.

I hate to hear that. Paul Newman has always been one of my favorite actors, and he is by all accounts a good person. Cancer sucks.

I read an article earlier stating that he recently completed the transfer of ownership of his company to the Newman charity foundation - reportedly around $180 million. That must be a sign that the end is near.

It's always sad to lose a legend, but having lived 83 years of his life ain't bad at all.

Not good news, but Paul has left us with a bunch of really good movies.

I'm a big fan of The Sting and Butch and Sundance.

So sad to hear. I just lost an uncle to lung cancer. Lost my mom to colon cancer, a grandmother to breast and lung cancer, aunt to ovarian cancer, uncle to brain cancer, and cousin to another type of cancer.

F cancer!

I used to smoke, and I am proud to say that tomorrow will be 1 month that I have quit, and I will NEVER go back to that nasty habit!

Those eyes. Those blue eyes.

What a gift we had in being able to enjoy Paul Newman's on-screen brilliance, but his legacy of caring for others is the real gift.

Truly a great man. I hope he beats this cancer and gets to stay with us for many more years.

i buy a lot of his products just because of the charity foundation...i particlualry like some of his salad dressings and his marinara sauce isnt bad for a jar.

I really wish everyone could just wait until the afflicted person announced it himself...or not. If he wanted everyone to know, wouldn't he make a statement about it? But no, we get it from a "friend," a hospital, etc. I think it's ******.

An impending sad end to a great career and life. I really liked his movies, Cool Hand Luke, The Sting, Butch Cassidy, others. I liked that he used his fame to develop a charity whose funds came from his consumer products. Best of luck to Paul.

He was smiling... That's right. You know, that, that Luke smile of his. He had it on his face right to the very end. Hell, if they didn't know it 'fore, they could tell right then that they weren't a-gonna beat him. That old Luke smile. Oh, Luke. He was some boy. Cool Hand Luke. Hell, he's a natural-born world-shaker.

I can't believe people hate on the smokers. He is 83, has had an incredibly productive life and brilliant movie career, but we have to comment that he was a smoker. So what? Nobody has commented that he is lucky to have lived this long because he was also a race car driver. He was great as Hud. I think I'll smoke a cigarette in his honor.
