I have several friends who do patent law but for big big firms and focus on high tech stuff.

Well a friend of mine created a tailgating invention and is looking to apply for a patent. But he is looking on the cheap b/c this isn't his real job just something he thinks might be worth some cash later on.

Any recommendations? Ballpark how much would this cost?

You can file a provisional for about $100. I think you have about 1 year to file for the full patent. That should be enough time to explore if you can make money off of it or not (by building prototype, showing to others, etc.)

Be careful, public exposure of the invention starts a one year period, after which you are barred from filing. I am a patent attorney but I do contract work through another attorney. I can put you in touch with him if you want, PM me if you're interested.

He's got one year from the time it's displayed in public (other than for limited testing purposes, which has to be proven), to have an application filed with the USPTO, whether by him or his attorney.
