Pat Buchanan was quoted as saying

"Western civilization is in its Indian Summer. It is on, in my judgment, pretty much its last legs, and I'm not sure it will survive this century."

Do you think Buchanan is right? If so, what replaces it? What will the political and social makeup of civilization look like 100 years from now?

Well I need to read and see what patterns past civilizations have followed
adn then see how Western Civ falls in line to it

My rudimentary recollection of past civilizations demise leads me to think he has reason to say that.

what do you think BI?

It has been morphing for a thousand years or more and will continue to do so. Five hundred years ago slavery was fairly extensive, now it is not.

A hundred years ago women couldn't vote or own property in most places, now they can,

Etc.

BI…I think he is correct. demographic trends are not in our favor and our economic path (by "our" i mean the entire west) is not sustainable. honestly, I think giving it to the end of the Century is very generous I would't be surprised to see it crumble in the next few decades. having said that, i am not sure something similar in many respects wouldn't rise from its ashes, i just happen to think the current permutation is about to die of interminable cancer.

I wonder what is meant by “Western Civilization”. Is he referring to the things that made Western Civilization take a dominant role in the world (Enlightenment, democracy, liberalism, scientific method, property rights, civil rights)? The East is succeeding now by successfully implementing Western Civilization. Is it that Western Civilization is in decline, or is it our comparable strength is diminished now that the East is using Western ideas?

I just can’t imagine the Chinese style of society succeeding long term. I would consider it in danger of failing just like the Soviets did. If anything, China is utilizing a Western Civilization paradigm which has already failed by the first countries to use it. Japan and South Korea are very much “Western Civilizations” but they do have a less individualist culture, but most Europeans are less individualistic than Americans. I think the West’s big problem may be work ethic, but how could you quantify that properly? Work Ethic isn’t really a Western or Eastern Civilization paradigm. What is the Eastern government or societal philosophy that Mr. Buchanan thinks is superior to Western ideas?

Which chapter of Suicide of a Superpower did Pat wax hysterical? The End of White America or The End of Christian America?

Gad?
"The East is succeeding now by successfully implementing Western Civilization. "

Not sure how you can write that and be serious. Unless your definition of what "Western Civilation" is vastly different than the usual accepted one ( see above posts)

Can you give an example of a "east" nation that is succeedingby implementing western civ?

WC may not look like it does now, but it is not going to disappear.

It is in the DNA of WC to take on aspects of other cultures (not solely a Western tact).

Alarmism.

Spheeris made three docs.
