Pass D

given up 229 yards in first half, including 62y, 33y, 33y, 22y, and 15y, as well 5/8 3rd down conversions...know it's first half of first game but YIKES we better improve rapidly...

Where is the pass rush we were supposed to have? We better get with it. I am impressed with Gideon, he is a player.

we play a boatload of good QBs with quick releases this year, i would not consider rusty smith running an offense from the 70s in the upper echelon and he's torching us...hope our learning process is rapid

Looks like they only have about 30 yards passing in the second half. Curious what changed, looks like they made some adjustments at halftime.

I dont give a damn how quick his release is , or if we hold em to 0 yards in the second half 229 yards in one half is absolutely not gonna get it done.

Florida Atlantic - 13:49

3rd-12, FAU34 13:00 R. Smith passed to J. Grant down the middle for 11 yard gain
4th-1, FAU45 12:30 R. Smith rushed up the middle for no gain

Florida Atlantic - 11:14
1st-10, FAU2 11:14 R. Smith incomplete pass to the left
2nd-10, FAU2 11:10 R. Smith passed to L. Jean to the left for no gain
3rd-10, FAU2 10:45 R. Smith passed to J. Grant to the left for 16 yard gain
1st-10, FAU18 10:10 R. Smith incomplete pass down the middle
2nd-10, FAU18 9:58 D. Edgecomb rushed to the right for 3 yard gain
3rd-7, FAU21 9:46 R. Smith incomplete pass down the middle
4th-7, FAU21 9:20 Tex blocked punt attempt by K. Peterson. Recovered by C. Brown

So their starter had two possessions in the second half and did absolutely nothing. So my point stands.

Nobody's saying the first half pass defense was acceptable, but I think you have to grant taht they were better as the game went on.

Lets hope the pass D didn't improve just because we knew they would pass and added more protection.

In a tight situation I would argue we would still have problems.

Well 2 blown coverage assignments all night ain't bad for young guys in a opener...My concern, as for most on here, is the lack of tackling which improved somewhat in the second halk...

Call me optimistic but I think they will be okay...I thought Thomas and Gideon were adequate not having split the field before...

The LB's played the run well and the D-line got enough pressure to force some poor throws...I did notice that the kid(FAU QB) seldom checked off and always looked first to his right...

Seemed like he was always throwing at Chykies side-not sure if by design...A couples guys, maily Brown, don't seem to be read the WR's well and footwork seemed to cost him a couple times tonight.

Most of the passes were down the middle of the field. I was really pissed. Make them make the harder throws to the outside and defend the sit down and seam routes down the middle. Looked a lot better in the 2nd half.

We all expected there to be some blown assignments with this secondary given how young they are. There were some missed tackles and there were some plays where the DB's went for the big hit or strip instead of just wrapping up and taking the guy down.

Thomas got picked on a bit, but I think they saw he wanted to just lay people out and used it against him because he went for a few big hits in the first half and looked like a fool. Secondary settled down in the second half and they looked very good after that.

I thought there was a pretty good pass rush but the guy just got the ball out of his hands. They ran a lot of max protect I thought, which helped slow the rush.

i dont like the argument of this being a good test for the team. they didnt play well in the first half against a so-so quarterback. harrell, daniel, and bradford will have an opportunity to eat us up if things dont change hard and fast

This is actually a perfect test for them. Remember 5 frosh at safety. Very young and inexperienced secondary overall. They needed to play a team that would give them game reps in the passing game. Let's just let them work out the kinks and get some games under their belts.

Like many have pointed out they seemed to get getter as the game went on.

Also if Thomas struggles again, Scott played well. Kind of suprised Chykie Brown started over Beasley but perhaps they were going for more size. Glad to see A. Williams getting reps. he is the future in the secondary no doubt. Cu Brown is the x-factor this season and his development when he is injury free will be interesting to watch.

Our pass rush and secondary had certainly better improve exponentially by the time we play BlowU, or it's going to get very ugly.

It they don't, Bradford will be able to direct their offense from a lawn chair behind center.

We actually had a pretty good pass rush all game. Our D-line, particularly Miller, was destroying the o-line and we got some guys going to the QB practically unabated. The QB was just good at getting the ball out and moving around. Safeties play better like they did in the second, and you won't see the QB getting the ball out anywhere near as quickly.

The coverage could have been better, but on a majority of the passes in the first half, the issue was an inability to tackle in space. Texas has been horrible in this area for the past two seasons.
