Reuters) - A federal judge in Wisconsin on Friday struck down parts of a law restricting public sector union power in the state just hours after a recall election was set for Republican Governor Scott Walker over his support of the controversial union law.

U.S. District Judge William Conley in Madison, Wisconsin struck down a part of the law approved by the Republican-led legislature last year that required annual union recertification votes by a majority of members in the unit. He also struck down a provision that made paying of union dues voluntary.

Conley's decision was on a lawsuit filed by unions who fiercely oppose the new law. The law also restricts collective bargaining over wages and requires public sector unions such as teachers to pay more for pension and health coverage

So if you are teacher in Wisconsin you have not choice or freedom or right to vote, they just take your money? This will be an easy decision for the Supreme Court.

I'm dubious:

The law, known as Act 10, requires most public sector unions to hold annual votes on whether a majority of its members want to recertify the union. It also took away the rights of some unions to automatically collect dues from members' paychecks.

The court kept most of the law in place, but it ruled that the state did not have the power to pick and choose which unions could deduct dues. Under Act 10, only "public safety unions" -- those representing firefighters and police officers -- could continue to take out payments automatically.

"So long as the State of Wisconsin continues to afford ordinary certification and dues deductions to mandatory public safety unions with sweeping bargaining rights, there is no rational basis to deny those rights to voluntary general unions with severely restricted bargaining rights," the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Wisconsin concluded.

The judge was appointed by Obama and caved to the union bosses. Quite a shock.
