PARKING

Hi guys. My son is set for Dobie this summer and fall. How does parking work? Is it really $1000 a month?

Isn't paying full price up front vs. monthly payments cheaper?

o.k., sorry about that. I was in a hurry and didn't read it before i hit the post button. The price for parking is $1000 for fall and spring. ( as if they don't get enough money just on their dorm prices alone.) You'd think it would be included in the price of the dorm.

I just want to know if there is anywhere cheaper to park?

My other question was paying for tuition. Isn't it cheaper to pay all up front rather than monthly payments?

"R" permits are cheaper, but you can't get one if you live in Dobie, can you? You have to live on campus.

The cost of the Dobie permit isn't included in the room because that wouldn't be fair to the students who don't bring cars (besides the fact that the garage is probably a different page on the accounting ledger for Dobie Center than the dorm).

If your son is a freshman or it is his first year on campus I suggest he leave a car at home. He does not need one. If he wants to go home for a weekend or few (which will dwindle as the year goes by) he can take one of the many express buses to Houston or Dallas or fly. There is a bus that is free to the students that leaves two blocks from where he leaves, and it goes to the Airport.

Save the cash, the hassle and the worry. He can and will discover more if he does not have a car. Besides, he will have tons of friends that have one he can tag along with and use THEIR GAS.

mary lives in the new braunfels/canyon lake area, loop.

mary, i would agree with loop. no car at Texas. he'll definitely discover Austin and not the ATX.

Gardere, I am sooo offended that you don't remember where I live....

I live in Ft. Worth.......

Thanks for all of your replies. I like the idea of no car, but he may not like it too much!

Who cares what he likes, mary? You're paying for college, the dorm, and all that stuff. If you don't want to pay for the car, parking, gas and all the other BS that comes along with it, then don't.

There are PLENTY of ways for students to get around without having a car, and trust me, he will be one hell of a lot safer not driving in Austin's traffic all the time.

First choice -- no car in Austin. At least in the first semester/year -- see if he misses it that much.

Second choice -- if he's living at Dobie, go ahead and fork out the extra bucks to park at Dobie. If he parks off site he will very rarely drive the car, and you may as well have gone with #1. When I was in Dobie, I had a couple of friends from the dorm who had UT parking (C permit, I think? Is that even still around?) and they only drove when going home or when they had to hassle with the car and move it for athletic events. If we needed to drive anywhere, always used someone's car (read: mine) that was parked in the Dobie garage.

One other thing to consider, is he going to work? I needed my car to get to my job during school, but I also didn't try very hard to get a job near campus/on a bus route (gas $ was not as huge of an issue as it is now).
