OWS killing NY businesses

Looks like OWS got some new protestors. In any socialist revolution, there has to be acceptable casualties....

A New York City cafe cut its staff by nearly 25 percent last week because of lost business due to the ongoing Occupy Wall Street protests, the cafe's owner told FoxNews.com.

Marc Epstein, owner of the Milk Street Cafe at 40 Wall Street in lower Manhattan, said he had to cut 21 of the 97 members of his staff on Thursday and Friday after seeing sales plummet by 30 percent in the six weeks since the protests began. He's also been forced to slash the restaurant operating hours, moving up his closing time from 9 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays.

FoxNews.com's calls seeking comment from New York police officials were not returned on Tuesday.

Trump, who owns a 68-story skyscraper near the site, told FoxNews.com that Epstein is not the only business owner taking a severe hit since the protests began.

"It's a very sad situation," Trump told FoxNews.com by phone. "They opened up to rave reviews and now because of Occupy Wall Street, nobody's going down there. People are shunning the area; it's a very big problem."

Trump said he is "in the process" of discussing the potential removal of the barricades with city officials.

"I hope so," Trump said when asked if he thought city officials will be sympathetic to his request.

Prior to last week's terminations, Epstein told Bloomberg late last month that the police barricades surrounding Zuccotti Park have deterred shoppers and caused about a 20 percent drop in sales.

Asked if he felt the protesters realized they were hurting his business, Epstein replied: "I'm very afraid of getting into what they are thinking and whether it's the police or the protesters because I don't want to get mixed up in the battle between them. But everyone should understand the consequences of their actions and nobody is."

That is too bad.

I'm sure you're just as upset on the many jobs lost because of banks/Wall Street abuses and excesses.

You know, the reason for the OWS protests?

No?

most fo the protestors demands that i have seen have very little to do with the banks.

Nope. I'm more concerned about the loss of jobs due to the government's abuses and excesses. Blaming "Wall Street" is misguided and irrelevant. There's a reason that these people can camp out for days/weeks/months at a time and it's not because they can't find a job.

Demand one: Restoration of the living wage. This demand can only be met by ending "Freetrade" by re-imposing trade tariffs on all imported goods entering the American market to level the playing field for domestic family farming and domestic manufacturing as most nations that are dumping cheap products onto the American market have radical wage and environmental regulation advantages. Another policy that must be instituted is raise the minimum wage to twenty dollars an hr.

Demand two: Institute a universal single payer healthcare system. To do this all private insurers must be banned from the healthcare market as their only effect on the health of patients is to take money away from doctors, nurses and hospitals preventing them from doing their jobs and hand that money to wall st. investors.

Demand three: Guaranteed living wage income regardless of employment.

Demand four: Free college education.

Demand five: Begin a fast track process to bring the fossil fuel economy to an end while at the same bringing the alternative energy economy up to energy demand.

Demand six: One trillion dollars in infrastructure (Water, Sewer, Rail, Roads and Bridges and Electrical Grid) spending now.

Demand seven: One trillion dollars in ecological restoration planting forests, reestablishing wetlands and the natural flow of river systems and decommissioning of all of America's nuclear power plants.

Demand eight: Racial and gender equal rights amendment.

Demand nine: Open borders migration. anyone can travel anywhere to work and live.

Demand ten: Bring American elections up to international standards of a paper ballot precinct counted and recounted in front of an independent and party observers system.

Demand eleven: Immediate across the board debt forgiveness for all. Debt forgiveness of sovereign debt, commercial loans, home mortgages, home equity loans, credit card debt, student loans and personal loans now! All debt must be stricken from the "Books." World Bank Loans to all Nations, Bank to Bank Debt and all Bonds and Margin Call Debt in the stock market including all Derivatives or Credit Default Swaps, all 65 trillion dollars of them must also be stricken from the "Books." And I don't mean debt that is in default, I mean all debt on the entire planet period.

Demand twelve: Outlaw all credit reporting agencies.

Demand thirteen: Allow all workers to sign a ballot at any time during a union organizing campaign or at any time that represents their yeah or nay to having a union represent them in collective bargaining or to form a union.

I'm still looking for the bank reform

Seriously?

Are you pulling a Rip Van Winkle?

Where have you been the past few years?

You can start by reading Gillian Tett's nice book. I'm sure Amazon has it: Fool's Gold. Banks, mortgages, cdos, swaps, neat stuff like that.

So i guess Pheram's never going to buy a house with a mortgage because it will be "helping wall street".

If the ows losers don't have any demands, then what is the point of even listening to them?

that is not my argument - it is an argument - just to give people a perspective that our prptestors are better off than most other people in the world

Maybe the protesters should be be protesting against the colleges that charged them 10's of thousands of dollars for worthless degrees. It's not the bank's fault they have huge debts from college. If the gov't hadn't made student loans so easy to get the colleges couldn't have raised their tuitions to such obscene levels.

That argument doesn't make sense. The point is that these people who are claiming to be disadvantages and held back are in fact doing quite well - and maybe the problem is that our society seems to have the idea that if you can own a house, car, TV and iphone and still be "poor".

Feeling that you're overtaxed despite being well-off is irrelevant and a bad parallel. A better one would be to claim that if we were taxed very little relative to other countries, then we shouldn't complain about the tax rates.

I saw some images of the Oakland protests that occurred overnight. I wish they'd stop imitating the Tea Party rallies with all their destruction rioting, bonfires, vandalism, rapes, etc...

So then tea partiers and others bitching/protesting about their taxes being too high should shut their holes since they are way better off than most other people in the world?
