Outside compressor-A/C heater

What should it cost to put in a nice new outside 3.5 ton compressor for a house? A Carrier or a Trane. My folks just got a bid of $2,000 and that sounds twice too high to me. All the inside stuff is fine, this is just the outside compressor.

I had a brand new complete (inside and out) Bryant Puron system, 3.5 ton, installed a year and half ago for about $4500, so $2000 for just the outside compressor doesn't seem outrageously out of line to me. Bryant is made by Carrier.

btw, that unit kicks some serious ***. Whatever those HVAC guys tell you their "load test" shows you need, bump it up a half ton (although if you just replace the compressor you probably have to match what the insides are sized for).

Clarify: when you say "AC & Heater" do you really mean that? All-electric unit? Or just the AC compressor/condenser unit, and the heat is gas?

No gas, all electric. It is a lake house, no gas lines out there. They are buying just the outside stuff. The compressor and whatever is normally outside.
