Outlook Express mini-crisis

So, last night my computer completely crashed and I had to reformat this morning.... still trying to put everything back together, not to mention get over all the files that I lost.

I've thankfully gotten so far as to get an internet connection and set up my email on Outlook Express- or so I thought. I can receive email via OE, but cannot send it. I get an error reading, "the server rejected the email address", yet I can send email from the same address through webmail. Any advice?

If you live off campus and have your outgoing mail server set to mail.utexas.edu, change it to your ISP mail server. I have Grande, so my outgoing mail goes out over mail.grandecom.net, but it still shows my utexas name when people receive the email.

outgoing smtp server for roadrunner is: smtp-server.austin.rr.com

(helped a friend w/ this very same thing earlier this week.)

try smtp-server.austin.rr.com for the smtp server (the one that sends mail). your pop server seems to be working since you can receive mail. it should be something like pop-server.rr.austin.com .

Why use Outlook/Express? Web based email can do the same, you can check anywhere, and attachments don't get downloaded unless you want. I threw OE out years ago and haven't looked back.

Just reloaded a computer of mine and what you need to do when you set up the accounts (in Outlook or Outlook Express) is click on more settings when you enter your smtp and pop3 servers. Under the outgoing server tab, you will see a box that says 'My outgoing server requires authentification'. Check that box and select the option that says to use your incoming mail server. That should take care of it.
