I thought I would update this thread with some pics. The event went off without a hitch and the inflatable screen was a huge hit and definitely worth it ($200). It's made by gemmy and can be found on Home Depot's website. Enjoy.

You might try and find a large piece of white tyvek, the sort of material you wrap houses in. Perhaps some waste from a billboard place?

Big white painters tarp would probably be good. Probably about $20 for a 9 x 12. If you wanted to go with something solid, a big piece of 4x8 white melamine would give a great screen (lowes not HD) abotu $42. This surface would be great but it's gonna be heavy as hell.

I might even loot at a cheap awnging if I could find a white cloth one I could roll up after use.

Blackout cloth can be purchased at any fabric store. Build a frame of 1X4 for it, wrap it around it, and outline with black cloth.

If you can sew or know someone who can, you can sew the seam on the fabric and double the size of the screen.

That's a pretty cool setup.

I'll bet the kids will want to bring all their friends over in the evenings.

I've done something similar by putting a white fitted sheet on my matress, and dragging it outside, propping it up on some chairs. Worked good enough.

The best thing about that screen is it comes with a duffle bag for easy storage and travel. In total, it only takes about 5 minutes for set up or take down.

I will be using this thing a lot. We are planning a monthly screening in the spring. Probably show different types of movies each month (ie, foreign, animated, horror, etc).

Nonbryan,
I use a Dell projector (1600 lumens) connected directly to my TW cable box. Once the sun goes down, it's plenty bright. I have 2 outdoor speakers on the porch which I use for audio. This is fine for football, but I may need to get some outdoor front right, left and center speakers for a movie.

We haev movie night in our backyard twice a year. It's a neighborhood tradition. We just staple gun a white sheet to the porch columns and use a similar projector to play a DVD. We don't have a DirectTV box out there, so wathching a live event doesn't work. Regardless, it's fun no matter how you do it.
