OU's biggest rival

I've seen it said that if Nebraska went to the B10, they could go back to playing OU every year. I got to wondering what would happen if OU was no longer in the same conference as Texas or Nebraska. Surely they wouldn't want to play both as non-conference games every year, that would be brutal. If they had to choose, which rivalry would they sustain?

OU would want to play Texas for the simple reason that they absolutely depend upon High School kids from this State. I'm sure they could arrange a non-Conference game in Jerryworld to try to maintain that foothold - although that didn't work out too good w/BYU this past year.

OU used to play Texas and Nebraska every year until the Big XII broke up the series with NU. It was similar to us playing OU and Arkansas every year when Arkansas was a nationally prominent team.

Roma - Yesh, but Neb was a conference game so they were only signing up for one recurring tough non-conference game. Two tough annual non-conference rivalries seems like more than anyone (other than an independent like ND) would want to do.

The SWC and Big 8 were not the Big 10.

No one in their right mind would join the Big 10 then Schedule OU every year.

Mich, tOSU, PSU....

"hey lets add OU?"

there is absolutely no question the pick would be texas if we were forced to pick.

and there is no way we schedule both OOC every year. you might have gotten some sooners to say nebraska if this were 1990.... but it isn't, and the nebraska rivalry has pretty much faded into the background already.... and we're in the same conference. damn shame.

Leaving aside the long history of the rivalry which both fanbases are so invested in, Texas and OU make so much $ off the RRR that it isnt going anywhere even if they move to different conferences. OU-NU would just be another game in terms of money while every year Texas and OU get paid handsomely to meet in Dallas.

When the Big XII was born, OU and NU were given the opportunity to schedule each other every year, cross division. NU said yes, OU said no.

I think that pretty much gives you your answer.

When Texas leaves the Big XII (this is not an if at this point), probably to go to the PAC 10, if OU does not go to the SEC, they will be made much weaker, more along the lines of Arkansas.

We should NOT play them every year because we will slow their weakening.

Good point, Scharnell - if we weren't in the same conference as either of them we'd probably need to schedule both of them as OOC games. At least it wouldn't be 2 tough games each year.

IF we go somewhere else without aggy, we'll still play them and okie. That's a big IF, because when push comes to shove, I think we'll have to take the agriculturally-inclined with us to make a move.

Either way, those two games are permanently on our schedule, no matter what conference we're in or who's in it with us.

I concur. It is going to be next to impossible to move without the ags. Unless of course the SEC welcomes them in. And, I am not so sure that is still the case, if it ever was.
