Our weakness?

I think that the weak link to this years team and last years team is our post play. We all know that Ashley Lindsey and A. Gayle are good on the defensive end but cant provide very much on the offensive side. Lindsey does every once in a while but Gayle does not have any offense whats so ever. My big question to the coaching staff is why not use Kristian Nash in the role of Baylors Rachel Allison. Nash is 6'2 and has some ofensive skills and can play defense but she rides the bench all the time. If given the quality minutes I think she help us alot. Memo to Kelsey Bone to come on down!

Clearly A&M's program is on the rise. It's going to be tough for UT to land Kelsey. I'm hoping Coach G and staff can work wonders in selling the Texas program. Ultimately, in the end, I believe Kelsey will choose the program where she feels she can cultivate that special relationship with her coaches, team and fans and reach her ultimate potential. The 4 coaches that Kelsey is considering have not won a National Championship.

Good luck to Kelsey wherever she chooses...

No doubt we've been lacking in post scoring.

I just want to say...i've noticed AG making some pretty good moves on her defender (without the travelling call) for the past few games. Granted, the shots are leaving her hands too hard and fast. But, it has been a huge improvement for her from the beginning of the season! When she learns the patience to shoot a little softer.....WATCH OUT!!!

Jusme, I agree. AG has some good moves and I think that her shot will improve if she puts in the time in the off season. I think we will be very strong in the paint with Reed an AG.

I agree that Bone has to be leaning to A&M if she is looking to step into a program that will immediately compete for a title. But she has also said that she wants to go to a program where she makes a difference and that would certainly be the case at UT.

AG has trouble making moves when she catches the ball with a defender playing behind. she doesn't always use her strength to push back, and she tends to travel quite often. Ashley Lindsey does well in that situation, because she can turn around and shoot the jumper.

anyone know why we don't try to lob the ball inside more to AG? i would like to see how AG would play behind her defender, calling for the lob, because she has great hands and she catches the ball well.

AG has improved over the course of the season and I expect will improve even more over the summer. Consistency is the big thing lacking, not just in the post, but overall. I like the potential we will have inside with Reed and AG.Kristen will be very important because she will be needed to give those two breathers, even if sis Kat starts at the four next season. Bone would probably contend for a starting position if she came here. She would definitely get a lot of minutes. But no question that she is likely the starter if she goes to A&M. And maybe at South Carolina and the other school still in the running.

I heard today it is down to TWO for Bone....

Texas and A&M.....

I am hoping it will be US!!!

KB, we ARE the better school, and let's face it, Austin is WAYYYY cooler than freakin' College (Way) Station!!

I like Gayle's competitive fire and her blocks, but if her offense doesn't improve quickly, I think Kelsey and probably Cokie would bypass her in the rotation quickly. I've never seen Cokie, but have seen Kelsey on snippets of tape, and she looks to have a very sweet shooting touch. We've got to have points. Friday was another exercise in frustration. The hustle and effort were fine, but we've got to have baskets. Everyone searches for answers. My current hypotheses are 1) just not enough talent and 2) something psychological we as fans don't fully undestand. Jody struggled with it, and Coach G is struggling with it.

UT being the last 2 on Kelsey's list makes me nervous. Can only imagine what Coach G and staff are feeling at the moment. Kelsey's decision will literally change the direction of either UT or A&M's program.

I definitely think there is more upside and more opportunities for making a profound impact at Texas. A&M is definitely a program on the rise w/o question.

Still, Kelsey will follow her heart, so whoever she chooses will be sooo lucky to have her.

I think we need Hill more than we need Bone. Both coming to Austin would be the best scenario, though.

It would be possible to make an argument that just about anything is a weakness, because at times it has seemed that way. But, I think most everyone here has nailed the issue. It is amazing how much better guards and a half court office in general can look when a team has a consistent scoring threat inside. I can’t remember ever seeing a basketball team without consistent inside scoring that didn’t also have inconsistent scoring in general. Jump shots are not always going to fall, and they are much easier to defend if you are not worrying about doubling in the post. There is a reason so many successful coaches over the years have preached an inside-out philosophy.

I cannot really complain about Ashley Lindsey. She is one of the most improved players on the team this year, as I thought she also was last year. If teams allow her to use her length and quickness she can be very good. If teams try to push her around…well, that is different. I wish she had been more consistent, but her size is what it is and that is always going to bring some limitations.

I think AG will be fine. Like most others I think her biggest issue is learning how to go strong to the basket but still maintain a shooters touch. To me it also looks like she should have the ability to develop a nice turnaround jump shot. But, I would rather she be consistent with that strong move to the hole before working too much on anything else.

The other thing about the posts is that we really need for them to pound the boards better. I think AG has the ability. But, she needs to work with the coaches on her footwork and positioning in order to make that happen.

I would love to see AG with both Reed and Bone. There will be no shortage of minutes for three quality posts, and wouldn’t that be a nice rotation.

Babhorn,

Just wondering why you think we need Hill more than Bone. Do you have a lot of faith in Cokie? Have you seen her play? Don't you think 3 strong posts are needed in the rotation? I'd like to see Kristin get more time, too. Of course, I know we need guards, also. Lauren Flores sounds promising. Ashleigh and Yvonne have good upside, I think.

jmo, of course, but getting Reed made landing Bone less of a necessity. We got a lot of guards both here and incoming on the small side (5-7 to 5-8). Brit and Erika will be Srs. and Kat a Jr. We need someone with some size to play the wing. Imo, the team needs four to five players to rotate in the P and PF positions. Right now, AG, with a lack of outside shot, is better suited to playing close to the goal rather up high. Kristen can hit the 10-15 footer and can down inside. Reed, if she has continued to work on her shot, will be able to switch high and low. Kat has shown that she can play inside. So, technically, we got four players to play the post although Kat is not your typical post player. Bone would make this rotation much stronger. After next season, we won't have anyone taller than 5-8 to relieve Kat, who I assume will slide out to the wing when Hartung comes in, giving the team AG, Reed, Kristen and Hartung in the post. Bone will be nice to get, but Hill, imo, is more necessary to add height, speed, and scoring to the wing/SG position which otherwise will be very thin.

Thanks, Babhorn. That all makes sense. True, we will be thin at the guard position pretty soon, too. I wasn't thinking about how short our guards are. I forgot how tall Hill is, so will check. Also, I somehow keep forgetting that Cortijo is leaving.

Babhorn, I agree completely. Bone would give us a killer post rotation but we seriously need some size and speed on the perimeter. I agree that landing Hill would go much farther in rounding out the team and could be the key to next year's team competing well in the Big 12.

Come on Tayler, head on down to Austin. Bring the parents too...they would love Austin. I've lived in Minnesota and Texas and you never have 30 below zero temps in Austin.

Kristen Nash should be a shooting guard like Arriaran....she was made for that and played that in HS...she can drain the 3 every bit as good as Erika or Kat.....she is not used well at this time, IMHO...

I think she is VERY under utilized....come on, Coach G!!

admittedly, the stats for last year don't show any attempts either from BTA by Kristen. But the range is known. And, while her shooting percentage dropped from last year to this year, I will still take 50% and the 83% at the charity stripe she posted this year as numbers I would like to see more than a few minutes every few games. (She was better than 60% from the field last year).

Factor in the effort she makes on the boards and it would seem Kristen should have earned a little more time on the court...if you look at rebounds per minute played, she actually has a better rate per game than even Ashley Lindsey or Earnie. She also has nearly the same total of offensive rebounds as Ashley Gayle. Oh yeah, and there are only three people with more blocks than Kristen has this season...two of them are named Ashley and the other one shares the same last name.

While there is obviously more to a player than a stat line, it would appear that the bench has been underutilized at times this year...

I love Kristen effort she makes when she comes into the game. A lot hustle and effort. But the problem I have is. What goes on in practice. Thats what dictate your playing time And that I dont know. Its the same for Aubrey. She very physical in the post. But once again I am not at their practices to see what effort they are giving. Kristen should be in a good position to get more playing time next year. Just continue to work on your game.

I love it when we analyze the team. It really makes you look at the team from different perspectives. OK, here are my thoughts.

We need a go to player. Someone who is not afraid to take the game over. We do not have this. I thought Brit would do it but she doesn't have that fight, that whatever I need to do FIRE that burns every game all game long. When Earnie had her double double the other day I thought maybe it had hit her and she would be a mad woman the rest of the tourny. But the fire fizzled out.

Kristen - I absolutely agree she needs more playing time. Her tenacity and fight much like her sister's fight is great and we need that. I think Coach G has a beef with her. But I wish they would let by gones be by gones and Coach would let her play quality minutes.

AG needs to run about 300 post move drills a day. Repition is the key to learning. Remember they turned Lindsey into a post so I know they can do it. Maybe a good post camp this summer for AG would do her some good. She just needs practice. I think she will be fine. Somebody posted somewhere that she will be like Danielle Wilson at Baylor and I absolutely agree. She will break out a little next year but her Jr and Sr year she will own the paint. PERIOD! Griner will only be able to dunk on AG if it's a fast break. I believe w/ AG's size and post moves once they develop, AG will shut her down in the paint.

I want Bone and Hill but I think we need Hill per what everyone else has already said. Plus, I think she will be that go to player that we need desperately. Nothing wrong with sharing the ball I think it's great. But a team needs a spark plug someone everybody knows will take over at any given moment to make sure her team wins. It's a time and place for everything and sometimes being a ball hog and scoring POINTS is what is needed in order to win.

And some brainiac and number wizard I'm waiting for one of you to post a comparison from last year to this year regular season to see if we improved, remained the same or regressed. As long as we improved I'm OK.

I love it when Kristen plays just as much as the next person, but do people really think Coach G actually keeps her on the bench to the detriment of the team for personal reasons? I don't find that logical. I think Coach G would make a business decision, not an emotional one.

For as long as I have watched basketball I have seen fans of middle school, high school, AAU, college, and professional teams always want the player with the least minutes to get more. Kind of like the backup quarterback always being the fan favorite. Of course, I do the same thing.

But, this time I really agree……I apologize for the short story to follow……

I have two daughters who grew up playing basketball. Neither was tall, fast, quick, or especially athletically gifted. At times they had trouble getting minutes. To an extent I understood. What they did on the court was not really going to draw your attention, and often did not look pretty. But, because they were my daughters I did watch, and pay attention. What I saw was that they played hard, did their job, and helped the team. They might not get the rebound, but someone else would because now there was one more person on the floor blocking out. They might not score, but someone else would because they set a screen, or ran a play the way it was intended. Inevitably the team had better results on the scoreboard while they played. No one else would have noticed this, because no one else would have paid attention. I understand that. But, it happened over and over and over…..with completely different teams since they were six years apart in age. You don't have to be the best athlete on the floor to make a difference.

Kristen has been my favorite player on the team since last year. While I don't watch her minutes and performance the way I watched my daughters it does seem that there is some of the same dynamic going on when she is on the floor. Although she is taller and more athletic she still often reminds me of my daughters….and I mean that in a very complementary way. I am very proud of my daughters. And, I think sometimes what you need is just someone who really wants a chance to make a difference.

I don't know Kristen. I assume that Coach G sees something that I do not. She is certainly in a better position to know what is best, and knows a lot more about basketball than I ever will. But, that is still my perception.
