Our PG shot 8 - 27 FG

This is obscene to me that Abrams is shooting this many shots and missing most of them. I can't wait to have Balbay play the point. Playing PG is a mentality which Abrams clearly does not have.

On the positive, I am really impress with Mason. He is developing into a very good all around player ala Royal Ivey. I am more comfortable with the ball in his hands than in Abrams.

Here we go again

Abrams is what he is, and Rick Barnes deserves as much blame/credit for that as anyone. The guy played the way he did and got 40 minutes of playing time. A little difficult to change one's behavior when you're being rewarded for it, I don't care who you are.

You might get ripped for this, but I completely agree with you SLX. I really hope James stays next year so we can see him as our primary scoring option instead of a streaky guard. I just can't believe Barnes actually condones this type of play from a guard. I really believe this team is loaded with offensive talent, and we're not going to use even half of it if Barnes lets AJ shoot with total freedom. We might have to wait till next year to see this offense run like an actual team.

And it is ridiculous that a player with his defensive problems would play 40 minutes under a Rick Barnes coached team.

He didn't even start shooting until Sexy Dex had to be taken out for foul trouble. He throws up a shot once in a while to open the middle.

Now what drives me nuts is when he drives, his shots look like a Jr. HS player cause he is afraid of the reject.

I like AJ, not so much as a PG but as a shooter to complement a true point guard. Balbay, you have to be kidding me, no.

Let Mason run the point.

Don't look at the stats, Nordberg. He's a true, natural PG... his father told me so! That's sure to help his NBA draft stock soar.

The real sad thing, Nordberg, is how unsurprised many of us were with that stat.

It's just more of the same when it comes to Abrams.

Well, I didn't need to see the comment to know it was true. 40 minutes of playing time was all I needed to see.

If the coach doesn't sit him, and then verbally encourages him to shoot more, I don't see how Abrams can be blamed for the completely selfish and destructive way he plays during games.

I'm willing to bet that by February, March, and April, Aj will be playing less and less PG and more SG, and getting more rythm shots off screens and hitting at a much higher clip, and with the way I expect this team to improve we should make a deep run and AJ will be a huge part of that. Aj will get his, and he is a huge part of our team.

Yeah I guess you are ok that an avg player is hijacking the team. If he jacks up 27 shots in any game, we will lose. I like Abrams but his game is an ALL or NOTHING. If we rely on his outside shooting, we will not go deep at all. For a guy who is automatic at the free throw line and has the ball that many times in his hands, how many times did he go to the free throw line??? Why not drive more to create some doubt on the defender? As of now, they will only play him to shoot outside shots.

Balbay should play more definitely. The guy can play some defense and he is looking to create for his teammates on offense. That is a true point guard.

Holy crap people, quit acting like you've never watched basketball before. Jesus, the greatest 3 point shooter in school history had an off night against a good team and now he sucks, he's an "average" player, he is a detriment to the team. Jesus, the same thing has happened to every great shooter, they get in slumps, they miss shots. And do you know what their coach has told every single one of them? KEEP SHOOTING. When you have a guy like AJ who can catch fire at any time you tell him to keep shooting.
Now granted, he needs to be taking different types of shots, which I touched on my earlier post, more shots off screens, more rythm shots, no shots off the dribble. ND did a great job forcing him to shoot off the dribble and it worked, and we still lost by one, in freaking NOVEMBER.

I'm seriously going to save this thread and bring it up in March and see how many people have changed their tune. We've played FOUR
games so far, and it's extremely dumb to be making assumptions and accusations this early in the season.

Like I said, come March AJ will play a VERY vital role in our success. Where is the thread on Damion settling for jumpshots that he kept missing over, and over, and over, and over? Where was the demand that Damion start slashing and trying to score around the basket more? At least Aj has been an amazing jump shooter his entire life, we want him to keep shotting, we need him to keep shooting.

Plus, if we actually had someone else on offense who was doing anything we wouldn't need AJ to shoot so many shots. When you are losing and no on else on your team is scoring with any consistency, your top scorer tends to start taking things into his own hands. Last night didn't work out. Other nights it will.

It's like y'all have never seen basketball before or something....

Who else was doing anything? AJ had to shoot becasue we had no offense at all. No one else could score worth a damn. He missed so much because we couldn't get him open looks. I don't think he should play PG but he needs to be on the court because he is our best scorer.

Some of you act like he is the most selfish person you have ever seen which anything but the case. When no one else was doing anything he tried to lead his team to a win but he had an off night. From someone who knows AJ he is a great young man and a great representative of the University and is a great basketball player.

I can't tell if Hobbes is agreeing with me or trying to make fun of me, but I noticed the term "chill out" in our posts quite often, which I believe is the correct term of usage at the moment.

AJ Abrams reminds me a lot of Daniel Gibson in the unnecessary lack of respect that he gets from our fans. I think he has matured a lot over his time at Texas. I think he plays a vital role on this team - and it would be worse if he were not on it.

I'm sure Abrams adopts 3 legged puppies, and helps old ladies across the road, but he is often the most selfish player on the floor. He's not always, and when he isn't the team plays better, but it's nothing to count on from one game to the next.

I'll never doubt the kid's work ethic, how hard he tries, or how much he wants to win, but the application of those attributes has often been poor over the last 2 years and now going into this season.

The idea that his behavior or the reaction to it is something new, or something caused by a bad shooting game, is absurd.

I am the guy who called Abrams average. I love his outside shooting but he should NOT be the primary go to guy. I like Abrams but he is strictly on the floor to score from the OUTSIDE which is well and good but don't try to put him at PG either. As the players around him get better, he will not be rely on so much which will be good for the team. I just did not like how he played in the ND game and some of you may be right that no one else step up. Here is my definition of average and we can compare him to some of the great ones we have had here at Texas in the last 5 years(Ford, Durant, Augustine). I would put a bunch of other players ahead of him if you want to compare him with other past players.

Avg = Great outside shooting + liability on defense + lacking ability to take it to the hole

Royal Ivey was average at everything except defense and he has made a nice NBA career for himself. But I digress. Sure, AJ will never have the pro success of the past greats, but he will finish as far away the most prolific 3 point scorer in UT history, one of the leading scorers overall in UT history, a guy who played a lot and scored a lot on many of the greatest UT teams in history, and instead of just naming all of his stats I'll give you this link, and let you decide if this resume is that of an "average" player: "Average"

If that's the Bio of an average player I can't imagine there are too many above average players.

Point being: Pro potential has nothing to do with success or esteem as a college player.
