Our only perfect record head football coach!

It was Frank "Little" Crawford who was our coach for one year in 1895 and he had a perfect 5 - 0 record. It wasn't unusual for a school to have a coach for just one year back then and bear in mind that we didn't have a head coach on our perfect 1893 record. All our games except one on Dec. 6, 1895 were played in November due to hiring Coach Crawford late in the season. But he did great. Also all the games were home games except the first one. The following games were played that year.

11-11 at Dallas University and we won 10 - 0
11-18 Austin YMCA and we won 24 - 0
11-23 Tulane and we won 16 - 0
11-28 San Antonio and we won 38 - 0
12-06 Galveston and we won 8 - 0

Yes all shutouts and we outscored the opponents 96 - 0 and had a perfect season. Well done Coach and to the team for a great year!

^you mean Alabama, not USC

I played Pee Wee football for the YMCA when I was 8. Just think, if I had only been born about a century earlier, I could have been a part of Longhorn history!

Nice one AstroVol. Haven't seen your posts on here much lately.

Tenn's recruiting sure seems interesting this season.

It is a good question as to why Coach Crawford didn't come back in 1896 and I am not sure. His home was in Nebraska and he returned there after coaching at UT so probably he just desired to go home.

An interesting note on the 1895 game day dates is that the first two games were played on a Monday, the third on a Saturday, the fourth on Thanksgiving Thursday and the last on a Friday.
The first game was in Dallas and since Dallas is about 194 miles from Austin I am sure they had to travel by train and I imagine it took about at least about 5 hours to get there. Remember this was 1895.

Congratulations!

The sports media seemed to go both ways regarding the recruiting this season. Some reiterated that the class was better than it looked, others seem to just hate Fulmer for waking up in the morning. But I guess it is like that eveywhere.

Pip I got this information at the UT web siteThe Link Some information is passed on from generation to generation and some is just from memory. I thought it was interesting. Also of interest it pointed out that Coach Crawford didn't actually coach the last game that season because I think the game with Galveston was added on at the last minute while he went to Mexico to attend some bullfights which I guess he wanted to do before going back home to Nebraska. The team did well anyway and won.

Maybe, just maybe (I don't know coach Crawford) he was under investigation for too many smoke signals to potential recruits.

Maybe there was some question of some of the players practicing while they were being paid by the local livery.

Maybe one of the players had a family living in a cabin that was owned by a local bandit.

Naw, I guess he just wanted to go home.
