Our new 'baby'

We decided our dog needs a companion and that our house needs more fur balls (we currently have an 120 lb dog and 3 cats) so we're getting one of my aunt's golden retriever pups. Here she is! We get her in two weeks!

So, tell me about retrievers. I know they tend to be awesome dogs. Any discipline suggestions? I want to make sure we train this one well. We didn't do such a great job with our other dog.

The puppies are in Liberty Hill. They will not be ready to go home for another 2 weeks. If you're interested I can put you in touch with my aunt.

I have a suggestion, invest in a couple bottles of Bitter Apple. It's a spray that dogs can smell and taste and the first time the mouth something which has been sprayed, they learn to leave it the F alone. The taste is nasty and the smell associated with it will remind them that "Hey, I don't wanna chew on that!".

Retrievers (and Labs) are some of the best family dogs to have. We have one yellow lab and a mutt that's probably 30-40% lab and they're allsome. They both loved to chew, especially anything our hands and feet touched (remotes, shoes, video game controllers, pencil's pens, etc.) My assumption is that those items had our smell on them. Anyhow, we broke them of the habit using Bitter Apple and once they passed about 2 1/2 years in age, they began to leave things alone on their own.

Retrievers are soft mouthed and like to be mouthy, much like the picture you have. You need to make a decision whether it's cool or not, and establish that now. In our house, it's ok and we play that way. But if you don't want them doing that, you have to start them early.

my parents have a golden retriever- she is absolutely awesome. Her first two years were a lot of work (she was pretty wild), but we were also bad at training her - too many "alphas" kind of, and she didn't know who to listen to. After 2 years she became really mellow. She loves to go on walks and ride in the car, but the rest of the time she just hangs out. She's extremely gentle and loooves kids, other dogs, cats, people, etc.
Have fun - goldens are the best!

So we brought the fluffy baby home last night... to a home without power nonetheless. But she kept us entertained in the Jesus Candle-bathed glow.

She's now two weeks older, here's some updated shots:

Cute, cute, cute! Goldens are great watch dogs! They watch people come into your house and they watch them leave!

Great dogs. We have had three, and except for the extreme shedding from March through about October, I would not get any other dog, especially if you have kids.

The Furminator is a good deal. It seems to do a decent job. Not sure about other goldens, but ours seems to be prone to getting hot spot in the warmer months, especially just after we have had her groomed. Vet says it is common in dogs with heavy coats. When I am planning to groom her, I just give her antibiotics for about 24 hours before, but last week she developed a nasty case of it in just about 24 hours on her entire left back leg. Poor baby. She's getting her summer shave just as soon as it clears up.

Have fun with Ruby!

Furrminators are awwwwwesome and well worth the $50 price tag. Our German Shepherd's shedding problem is near 0 after buying one. Just be sure to use it outside or you'll make a giant mess.

Very cute puppy! We're picking up our 2nd German Shep puppy this weekend
