OU vs. Texas – battle of the preseason mags

I’ll say up front that I don’t quite get the love for OU in various quarters, including, I suppose, the Big 12 coaches. I think the Horns have an edge in depth and on offense that will carry the day, even though I think Blake Griffin is a stud and Willie Warren is as good a pick as any as B12 FOY.

But here is a mini-rundown on the preseason magazines that I buy regularly: TSN, Lindy’s, Athlon and Blue Ribbon.

BR, which isn’t out yet, has OU sixth and UT 11th. Baylor is 16th (which, all things considered, is remarkable) and KU 17th.
TSN has Texas sixth, OU 22nd and Baylor 25th.
Lindy’s has OU seventh, Texas 14th, A&M 21st and KU 32nd.
Athlon has Texas sixth, OU 10th, Baylor 19th and KU 22nd.

Not a regular reader of Slam, sorry.

I don’t expect the B12 south to claim five of the top six spots in the league. Someone has to lose at least half of those home-and-homes. My suspect to drop to at least seventh is A&M or Oklahoma State. And, of course, there's also the chance that Scott Drew could coach full-out.

Discounting the Blue Ribbon book, which annual do you like the best? I only tend to buy one these days, after years of getting all of them, going back to Street&Smith, Dick Vitale, etc. It seems to me that S&S folded into Sporting News recently?

Well, as I like all of college hoops, if I had to buy one it would be Blue Ribbon.

Of the others, I have and still do like TSN the best. (Yes, TSN sold its yearbook division to S&S, but they use the TSN name now.) The basic reason now is that they wait the longest to go to press. Example: You will not see J'Covan Brown listed on the Texas roster... you will in the other mags.

Before the internet, I used to hang on having accurate schedules, and now TSN is the only one that even tries (except for BR, of course).
