OU OT recruit

I'm so old I can remember when there was a general feeling that 300 pounds was way to big for a man to play football. Then Joe Jacoby of the Redskins started making life miserable for Defensive linemen and nobody much under 300 plays in an OL these days, even in college. 6'9 is taller than I can recall in the OL, but I think there's a lot of guys 6'6 and 6'7. Longer arms, bigger reach seem a clear advantage. Getting low and getting leverage ... could be an issue, but I'm not going to bet against the judgement of OU coaches.

I'm old enough to remember 240 being a good weight for a lineman. I also remember some of the players in my high school being proud of their "200 Pound Bench Press" t-shirts.

Athletes have changed quite a bit over the decades.

As far as I can tell there's only a couple of OTs in the NFL now with that height and they're both journeymen players. That may be because most athletes that size focus on basketball instead of football.

I can see the higher center of gravity being a potential negative issue, just as I can see the added reach being a positive. But then there are 6-6 players with a greater wingspan than a lot of 6-9 guys. I think it probably depends on the individual player more than anything.

It doesn't matter what size he is. To succeed as a blow u lineman he only needs to be able to learn the nuances of holding.

I predict that Mr. Jeffcoat will be eating his lunch on Saturdays in early October!

Roma, I remember those days well. The 200 lb bench press t-shirt ws the cool thing. Only the big 4A schools had any off season program. And lifting weights would get you muscle bound. I played HS at 250 lbs and was the biggest on the field. (Too big).

Farniok came to our camp last year and was a LONG way from an offer. I think part of the reason he got the offer was the coaches saw how much work he must've put in to make such improvements. That's the sign of a strong work ethic. His height scares me a little, but he's a good athlete, so we'll see.

FYI, Jeffcoat is a SDE. He will probably be on the opposite side of the line from this kid.

i'm assuming the coaching staff feel they can get him in better shape..... if they think he is too heavy. our summer workouts have been known to cause a lot of problems with guys keeping weight. guess it just depends on the guy. our coaches have neve shown reluctance to offer a "project" guy.

Ex-Michigan, and NY Giant Jumbo Elliott was about 6'9. It's not unheard of for an Olinemen, especially a tackle to be that tall. His long arms are a huge plus in pass protection.

Besides if he can't make it in the NFL I'm sure there is a career waiting for him in the WWE.

Now if you want to see someone that is too big for a position. Back in the late 90's I worked at a technical helpdesk with a guy that was 7'0 350. Anyone that asked him about his height or weight he would cuss out. He hated sports because he was always asked about it. Now that guy was too big for helpdesk.

He's 6'9" in high school and when he arrives on campus he'll probably shrink to 6'3". That and guys who run 4.3 in high school bust a 4.6. Amazing how that happens so often.
