Could we take some notes from them....PLEASE!!!!

Courtney Paris is no longer there...we can't say that it is because of her!!!!

So frustrating.......

nice example of argumentum ad hominen.

will not participate further in the 'attack a poster' effort.

I'm so excited that we made the tourney this year and once again lost in the first round to a team Texas should have defeated. I am so proud of the team and the accomplishments of our million dollar coach.

Hook Em Horns.... we are Texas and don't forget it.

Satisfied overseas?

"wait until next year" has been the consistent mantra from the supporters of Gail Goestenkors.  Results are facts, and the past 4 years are hardly anything to gloat about.  Sure, Texas has made the tourney the past 4 years.  So have the others that are relevant in WBB.  There is really nothing these past 4 years that indicate year 5 will be the turnaround of the century.  Sure, Top 10 class.  But the question is whether she can coach?!

In response to a previous post on this thread, I appreciate every poster on this board regardless of their views for one reason and one reason only... traffic. I remember the good ole days when UT was a power in women's basketball, and I remember the not quite so long ago good ole days when this board had lots of posters and lots of opinions. Remember when Longhorn Girlie used to have a bracket competition? I would like to see the interest pick back up and I don't see the point of badgering anyone on this board to try and get them not to post. I don't agree with a lot of what is said on here, and a lot of people are kind of predictable. So what? I just want to read news and opinions about the UT Lady Longhorns. JMO.

Sweet 16 is nice, but the Ags and the Bears are the teams to beat in the 12. As for the rest of the country, UConn and Tennessee own us.

"She took us to the tourney each year ..." posted by BevoMD

The TEXAS name on the jersey is a factor in tournament selection - and being a member of the B12.

We all can agree that WBB nationally does not receive deserved respect. That is why Voepel and other national pundits seldom criticize a WBB coach (Geno the exception).

Voepel and GG seem to not realize expectations at Texas. Has GG ever commented that she realizes and respects expectations at Texas ?

This is my first ever post on the board, however I'm an avid reader of the site for well over a year now. When reading posts I often wonder what someones background is, not to judge but in order to rate the validity in which I place in their comments. I'm a high school girls basketball in Texas, and I am a ut alum. I was also a graduate assistant for one year under Jody. I've been a head coach for 5 years and I've coached to the State championship once in those 5 years. I've also sent 9 players to division one programs on scholarship. So needless to say im very farmiliar with coaching in general and some of those who do it on the highest level.

With that being said I would like to weigh in on the most discussed topic on the board which is coach G and her ability to do the job we expect at Texas. I believe she is the right fit for the job and outside of Pat and Geno she was the very best available. From talking to her on many occasions I dont believe she underestimated the task at hand. She just underestimated how bad the state of recruiting was for the university. Shes done the best she can given the situation, including calling me and every single Texas high school girls basketball coach in the state during her first weeks attempting to build those much needed relationships. Although my expectations have not changed, I think that they were much different from those of my fellow posters. It takes TIME. I understand that we are TEXAS and we want and expect the best that money can buy but quite frankly money can't buy a programs success when you do things the right way which has been Gails main mission other than winning games. I see progress in the recruiting and I see major improvements as far as her relationships go with other hs coaches which cannot be understated. Next year is a make or break year and im willing to believe hold heartly that we will experienece much success on the national level

Seattle – Even though I disagree with you I am personally happy to see you give reasons for your beliefs rather than just make snide remarks. I do enjoy the discussion.

As to why I disagree…

You say that “Any coach who understands expectations would NEVER lose 11 straight to Texas A&M.”

I think that aggy may have some small part in that. As much as their success pains me, they do have a very successful program and I don’t think that they are going to lose just because GG decides that Texas should win now because we really, really want to. JC only won 1 of her last 4 games against aggy. This is not a trend that started with the new coaching staff.

“Quit referencing her success at Duke. Past performance does NOT indicate future success.”

You would be hard pressed to find a better indicator. The single best indicator of future performance or behavior is the past. It is not a guarantee. But, it is the top of the list for indicators. Would you suggest that a coaching search should not include a review of a coaches past performance? Would you suggest that a coach with a consistent losing record has just at much chance for success in the future as a coach who has a consistent winning record?

“Her showing at Texas is nothing to crow about.”

I haven’t heard any crowing. One of the things that frustrates me is the talk about people being satisfied with mediocrity. I haven’t heard anyone say that they are satisfied. It is a question of believing that progress is being made, or believing that it is not.

“Her rope in NOT unlimited in length.”

No one said that it was, or that it should be. I expect improvement. I expect significant improvement next year. I guarantee that GG would tell you the same.

……I find it a little funny, and ironic, to have people on this board heaping such high praise on JC and her time at Texas. The complaints about Coach G pale in comparison to the complaints about JC the last few years she was here. I was, and am, a fan of JC. She is not just Texas royalty, she is WCBB royalty. She was instrumental in building the sport. She put teams on the court who were not just talented but also excellent role models for young women. She, her staff, and players stayed involved in, and contributed to the community. But, there is no doubt that the program slipped long before GG arrived. I never put all of the blame for that on JC, but this board was full of people who did just that. I can’t help but laugh when I read people now talking about the good old days.

Welcome utfanforlife……This board absolutely needs more people to join in discussion. I am personally very interested in hearing a perspective from a Texas HS coach……Don’t place too much validity in my posts from a basketball perspective. I’m just a fan who has been a season ticket holder since the mid 80’s. I’ve seen a lot. That’s about all.

UT fanForLife, I too am so happy to see you here and to hear your perspective. Also, I am so happy to hear that you see great improvements in GG's relationships with HS coaches. I think that is what was sorely lacking in recruitment her first few years. I think that is why recruitment is so much improved for next year. I don't however think next year is a make or break year. The high powered class coming in next fall will only be freshmen. They may do really well for the most part, but freshmen will be freshmen and we all know they will have their ups and downs. I think GG's make or break year will be the following year. I do think she is the best person for the job and I look forward to the future with her at the helm.

Welcome, and nice comments, utfannforlife.

Why we're talking about JC given that she retired four years ago is beyond me. Interesting though that her loudest critics are the same few who are now attacking GG, and from the outset in some cases. As far as Seattle and his comment about JC...provacative, and it creates conflict and takes the thread off-topic (his actual intent), but not his true feelings at all.

Since we've delved into the past here are the facts. The Horns were among the most successful programs in the country duirng the 80's; if you include the final year of AIAW competition the program went 9 conseuctive years making the Elite 8 or better every season but one(Sweet 16). That includes 3 final fours (one AIAW), one national runner-up (AIAW) and one undefeated season and an NCAA title. The Horns went a remarkable 251-24 duirng those nine seasons, including 197-14 during the 1982-1988 timframe, and won eight consecutive conference championships. JC took on dual-roles during the 90's and the program experienced a downturn, or steep decline if you prefer to call it that (given where the program had been that would probably be a fair assessment). She gave up the AD position and led a resurgence at the start of the new decade that eventually resulted in three consecutive Sweet Sixteens, two conference championships and one league runner-up finish, a Big12 tournament title, two additional national coach of the year honors, and a return to the Final Four. After two seasons without an NCAA invite, JC retired. End of story.

As utfannforlife pointed out we hired the best available coach in the country when JC resigned, which is precisely what we should have done. A coach who boasted 10 consecutive years in the Sweet Sixteen or better, 7 Elite Eights, 4 Final Fours and 2 Championship game appearances. And equally important we hired a coach who embodies the character and high ideals associated with Texas women's basketball. The team has made four consecutive NCAA tournaments with a record of 83-49 during that timeframe, after a two-year tourney absence and a combined record 31-29 in the seasons immediately preceding GG's arrival. That's a turnaround no matter how you look at it. No, it's not a championship - conference or otherwise - but it's a significant improvement, and in difficult circumstances given the state of program, and landscape of the league when she took the helm. It's also better than her conference counterparts did at the same stage in their respective tenures, all of whom it can be argued began their Big12 careers in a more favorable environment. Recruiting has also improved; we had a strong freshman class this year, and have four top recruits coming in next season. We also have three top recruits committed for 2012 and 2013, and are in the mix for several more of the nation's top prepsters for the same classes. IMO, and in the opinion of most others (including those across the country who follow women's hoops most closely), we have one of the best staffs in the country. And, as has always been the case, our program does things the right way and adheres to the highest standards; that counts for a lot and will pay dividends in the end.

Overseas, you have an overly positive way of looking at things. I'll bet you're a big fan of aggie football. They've done a wonderful job too!

Rexy I only believe that it's make or break because she regardless of her abilities because we know that she is a fantastic coach but she has to give cp justification for a new multi million dollar contract. And I believe she'll prove that on the court so I'm not the slightest bit concerned. And I also say that because she will have one of the largest collections of talent in the nation. I expect a Top 10 finish and this is my first year with such expectations. I thought this season would have turned out much different until cokie got hurt. She actually over achieved, not by TEXAS standards but she did the best she could with what she had. And lastly we can't rely on the "freshman" crutch next year, because we all know that freshman aren't freshman anymore. They come in playing at a very high level. This years all freshman team could without a doubt compete for a national title
