Ottawa and Monteal

i love the ste. elizabeth pub in MTL. It's in an alley a couple blocks west from St. Denis down Ste Katherine, to the north. if you hit St Laurent turn around., I think you pass a chip 'n dales joint on the right if you're coming from St. Denis as well. Has a a great beer list and an awesome patio/terace in the back, I love it, as good if not better than any in Austin.

Check out the old port, old world style cobblestone streets, alleys, restaurants, hotels, cafes, etc... Mount Royal might be something you want to hike up and check out. Crescent has more of the hardcore partying, but I prefer St. Denis and all the sidewalk cafes & bars. Rue Prince Arthur has a nice little pedestrian mall for other eating options and just makes for a nice walk.

and if gentlemen's establishments are your bag, a buddy of mine has an unhealthy obsession with club supersexx, supposedly it's one of the finer joints, one of many, many joints... supposedly Laval is another hotbed of long lost okie talent, but that's out of town on the other side of the island.

last call is 4am, which owns.

Montreal is a beautiful city in general. I enjoyed checking out some of the far-flung parts of the city (neighborhoods) by getting on the Metro and just hopping off at various places. I stumbled upon some pizza joint that was fantastic but Hell if I could tell you the name or where I was. Really, I found a lot to explore this way. BTW, most of the food in Montreal was delicious and reasonably priced. I was in grad school at the time and was eating way better than I did in Austin.

I also found Mount Royal to be a nice diversion, although I didn't check the whole thing out. The McGill campus is nice too, but I don't have any recommendations specifically.

If you are into Catholic churches, the historic cathedral (Notre Dame- I believe) is quite nice to check out. I too liked the rest of the old town, which is where the cathedral is. Oh.. as an architect, you might like checking out the Olympic Stadium and the surrounding area. I thought it (especially the comemorative plaques) was pretty cool, although it had the Logan's Run sort of look to it after all these years.

Thank you, so far... I've heard nothing but goot things about Montreal. We'll be staying at the Sofitel, about a block from McGill and at the base of Mount Royal. Genleman's Clubs really aren't my bag... nor my wife's.

with the wife you'll probably like walking st. denis and prince arthur, as well as the old port. take the yellow metro line a few stops to its end, stops at Parc Jean Drapeu, nice quiet park, it's an island in the St. Lawrence they built with all the debris they excavated when they built the subway system, it hosted some olympic events, there's a casino out there too

Stop by Lafleur's or La Belle Province (chains) for the poutine, one of the greatest concoctions on earth as YChang can attest to. Montreal "smoked meat" is their thing apparently, so grab a smoked meat sammich from Schwartz's while you're there too. Just don't confuse their version of smoked meat with Texas' or you'll be disappointed.

Get a smoked meat poutine in Montreal, then go get a 4 cheese poutine at Elgin Street Diner in Ottawa.

I'll be there in 2 weeks and can't wait to hit ESD...

So... I keep seeing poutine on menus here in Ottawa. What is it? It looks like fries with stuff on it.

it's fries w/ a syrup/gravy sauce that originated from the Montreal smoked meat shops, topped with FRESH mozza curds.

You mix it up, let the cheese melt nice and good, and mmmmmmmmmmmm. But you have to get it from the right kind of place, a nice greasy joint, otherwise it'll be cold and ****** with crappy fries and old crappy cheese.

god I miss poutine....

and if you're near McGill check out the Rutherford Museum if you're a bit of a geek
