Other than Munich, what

Headed to Austria, CZ and Munich next fall and the wife and I are looking to add a few more days into the trip and catch some other German cities/regions. I am looking at some suggestions that could be covered in 3-4 days from Munich.

Thanks

There have been a lot of threads over the years on this forum about Munich and the vicinity. You might want to search the old posts.

Outside of spending your extra time in Munich, here is a short list of places fairly close to Munich: Bamberg, Nurnberg, Berchtesgaden, Garmisch, Oberammergau, Chiemsee, Salzburg, Neuschwanstein castle, and Innsbruck.

It all depends on what you want out of your extra time: beer drinking (a personal favorite), cultural, scenic views, etc.

A day trip to Dachau is a good (but sobering) day trip from Munich.

The Black Forest could be a nice area. I spent Christmas in Bamberg/Nurnberg, which was great, but not sure how it would be during other times of the year. Nurnberg is famous for its Christkindlmarket.

Budapest could also be an option if you're open to something outside of Germany. It's one of my favorite cities in Europe, and a few years ago I did a Budapest-Munich-Prague trip.

Salzburg is one of the most beautiful cities in the world, and is a short drive or train ride from Munich.

The castles built by King Ludwig are in the area of Garmisch-Partenkirchen and are also not far from Munich.

Innsbruck might be worth a visit. Lovely Old Town, good food, nice people, realy lovely hotels there too.
