OS X Tiger Problems (updated)

i installed tiger last week and have some buggy problems with it. has anyone else here installed tiger and have you had any problems with it? my main issues involve some third party software apps like roxio popcorn that wont work until they update it in a few weeks. my mail 2.0 doesnt work and it comes with the package! i had to make some changes and reconfiguring in the command console in order to get my powerbook to shut down properly.

it appears to me that they rushed this out a bit early, there are numerous bugs that have been reported from around the globe and while there are some really cool features like spotlight and dashboard, it just appears they stil had some work to be done first.

i hope 10.4.1 comes out soon. what is your impression of tiger so far?

I don't upgrade major system versions until it's been around a while. I may upgrade at work more quickly, but will wait at home at least another month. macintouch has a whole section on mail 2.0 and mentions popcorn.

the osx group at my job is filled with talk of 3rd party stuff no longer working. i'm waiting at least until 10.4.1 or even 10.4.2.

whats weird is that some things wont work on powerbooks and yet will work in imacs and vice versa. i cant remember any major upgrade like this pc or mac that has this many bugs in it...

10.0 (OS X) was pretty rough. It was practically unusable until 10.1. This is probably the biggest overhaul since then.
3d party app not working isn't really a bug. Like I said, give it a bit and see how many get worked out quickly.

im totally in shock that a company like roxio would not get one of its top applications like popcorn done in time for the release of tiger. especially considering the fact that on the box it says its for 10.2 and above. totally misleading, people have been buying this at the stores and then bringing it home only to find out that it doesnt work in their new OS.

thats totally unacceptable for a company with a good rep like roxio...

A lot of third party apps were using undocumented (i.e. unsupported APIs) in Panther and earlier versions of OS X. With Apple's undocumented APIs, they're usually undocumented because they have good reason to believe that they'll change them in some future update. For that reason they discourage their use, but some programmers can't resist, so when the versions change the program doesn't run properly. It'll all get sorted out.

Mail seems to be having some problems for other reasons, largely because it was significantly rewritten. Lots of new code, lots of new bugs.

If you think no other OS update has had as many problems, you don't remember very far back.

i never used ME so i dont know abut that one but i heard horror stories. i am new to macs so i also wouldnt know about any past system releases with them...all i know is that i i expect a lot out of apple and its suprising that something like powerbooks not being able to shut down and mail 2.0 not working at all were not corrected before they shipped it.

i have been perusing many different website forums and mail not working is one of the most common complaints about tiger so i know im not the only one. there were also numerous complaints about powerbooks not being able to shut down. some of the other problems didnt affect me but these were two major problems and i cant believe they couldnt see these coming.

many people are also having problems with safari and rss. i use firefox so i havent really noticed that. also spotlight is not working properly with a lot of people but fine on mine.

I have an apple now, but not installing it yet.

I think I was the only person to like ME. It just worked for me with few crashes. Probably luck more than anything.

I've seen very few "not working at all."
Mostly complaints about certain configuration issues, setup for various acccount/types, the gui, whatever.

As I said, it was released less than a week ago. caveat emptor.

okay let me make this clear then. by not working at all i meant that you cant use it. it wont send mail or receive it. to me thats not working at all. i know there are tweaks to the code and configuration that will be made to resolve this and of course it will be functional then.

another question about tiger for you mac users, do you guys think that tiger is a new OS or just a service pack? or maybe somewhee in between. i understand that a lot of the changes involve kernel rewrites and things to take advantage of G4 and G5 artchitexture but are most of the changes with tiger "under the hood" ? as i have seen it put on some message boards? are these changes worthy of the $130 pricetag?

just thought that i would update this thread. i fixed the problem tonight. what i found out was that the smtp server port is typically port 25 by default. for some reason many isp's have closed off this port now and nothing will go out through it. i plugged in 587 instead which was recommended on some site and it works now. i hope this will help someone who also has this problem...

i would sincerely like to apologize to all the mac users out there for questioning anything that ever comes from apple. jesus i had no idea that you guys were such a touchy bunch. i thought it was kind of a neat fraternity at first but it seems like more and more that anytime you ever make any slightly negative comment about a product from apple you get jumped on and not just on here. i know sessamoid has helped me in the past and i appreciate it.

i dont know if its an isp issue or not, that is my guess, all i know is that temporarily it is working, port 25 was some sort of security risk and i dont know if i have opened myself risk wise by using this alternate port or not. i dont know enough about it. im hoping that the next update will fix this problem the right way. i just know that i shouldnt have to be experimenting with different commands in order to have my computer shut down.

i still think tiger is very buggy but i know that it should lead to greater things down the line. maybe around 10.4.3 we should be really starting to see its full potential.

SBC Dsl starting blocking SMTP port 25 in January of this year; I found out because I was suddenly unable to send mail (UT is my mailhost) and found out I had to change the port from 25 to 587, like this in Eudora: SMTP server: mail.utexas.edu:587 this was an anti-spam thing.

You're the only one who seems "touchy" on this thread. You need to get a mantra, perhaps? There's plenty to be critical of Apple about. Nobody is saying otherwise. That's why I posted the macintouch link; it's nothing but support issues.

thanks for the link pmg, i found that earlier this morning. roxio is just a great company with some awesome products. companies like symantec should takes some notes...

I'm not surprised ISPs are changing the default port for the SMTP servers and blocking the default port. Viruses and worms often target port 25 because that's where mail servers typically listen. It's only a stop gap measure that will stop the casual attacks, but won't deter the smart crackers. A simple port scan will detect the open smtp port.

Popcorn got updated faster than I thought it would.
