Options for creaky hardwood floor

I have an older house (pier and beam foundation). I think the hardwoods are original- if not, they're definitely old. They don't look too bad, but they are really creaky and hollow-sounding. What are the options for this? I don't want to pay for all new floors. What all does refinishing entail? Can someone come in and "tighten" everything up? What costs am I looking at? Fyi, the area I'm concerned with is about 800-900 sq ft. There are only about two or three really bad areas.

You can crawl up underneath and shim the areas that are sagging and thus creaking, if there is no sub floor. If there is a sub floor you may be able to use screws (appropraite sixe to not go through the hardwood) to tighten down the floor. You can also try and push wax into the gaps as that's been known to work on minor creaks.

Creaking is also a symptom of the floors having been refinished as much as they can be. They get thin and start to creak.
