If you had to guess, what would be the opening day lineup for the Horns right now? How about the rotation, closer, etc, how are they looking? Help me, I need some Longhorn baseball scoop.
My best guess would be
Tucker 3B
Torres 2B
Danks CF
Russell RF
Moldenhauer LF
Belt 1B
Clark C
Rupp DH
Hernandez SS
Wood on Friday
Big Bird on Saturday
Whitmer on Sunday
I would also think you will see a closer by comitte practice until somebody steps up and takes the job.
I agree with Txlonghorn47, except you have Clark too low.
I could see:
Tucker
Danks
Russell
Moldenhauer
Clark
Belt
Torres
Keyes (DH)
Hernandez
This lineup has speed and power from top to bottom. Hernandez at #9 is basically a 2nd leadoff hitter. Keyes hitting 8th is due to what he showed me in the Fall. I think he has the potential to knock in a lot of runs from that spot in the lineup, assuming Clark, Belt, and Torres get on base a lot (which I think is a safe assumption).
Tucker is the logical lead off hitter, given his speed and ability to get on base. Danks at 2 gives us the option to move Tucker up via sac bunt or get some speed on base in case Tucker doesn't get on. He also has nice doubles power. You put you're best hitter at 3, so that's where KR goes. Moldenhauer and Clark are basically you're two clean up hitters, both with great power. And Belt at 6 give you some more power in the middle of the lineup.
And with all the talented pitchers we have, I really have no idea who will get a chance to play. Main thing in my opinion is to get a shut down closer, which (no offense to Randy Boone, who was solid but not spectacular) we have been lacking since 05.
Travis Tucker 3B
Jordan Danks CF
Kyle Russell RF
Preston Clark C
Russell Moldenhauer LF
Brandon Belt 1B
Michael Torres 2B
Cameron Rupp DH
David Hernandez SS
I think its big bird on Friday, Whitmer on Saturday, and Wood on Sunday. I think Boening will take over the saturday spot mid-season when he is fully healthy. Who is our closer? And is Walker relieving or midweek starting for us? Seems like we have a lot of talented starters this year.
Nobody has mentioned Chance Ruffin yet on this thread. Except for his first inning against BU, he pitched superbly in the fall scrimmages--including zero hits in his four innings as the starter on 01-Nov (also 4Ks and 2 BBs according to the recap).
Out of the windup he looks like an old-time starter, but he also showed signs of a bulldog closer's mentality when he worked in relief against BU and SWT. If he keeps pitching like he did in the fall, he'll be a major contributor to the staff, wherever Skip decides he fits in best.
