Opening game impressions

Just back from the game. It felt like finding a comfortable old shoe that has been missing. It was Augie ball all over again and done very well. Great pitching, outstanding defense, timely hitting, bunting and sacrificing. Brandon Loy at 3rd could be our next David Maroul. He is spectacular on defense and can hit, also. Tucker was his usual self, solid and consistent. Ruffin...what can you say? He is good and he is a bull dog.

Two interesing incidents to me were: the first reliever Stayton Thomas could not find the plate and Skip Johnson went to the mound. After that he threw strikes and got them out. Then Discharry came in and could not find the plate. Skip came out and talked to him and the exact same results occurred. He looked like another pitcher. I do not know what Skip said but it was really noticable.

Speaking of Stayton, he threw 6 balls to start and then who saves his ***? - Loy. He started the tough DP who got Stayton out of the jam - and then he comes up with 4 strikes for a K to get out.

Loy them comes up and beats out a throw to manufacture a hit ..

Yeah, Loy seems to be THE find, after just one game.

Great thing to win the first one. Great to see we held them to a run. Great defensive effort. Problem though is the fact that we look to have the same MO as last year and the year before. Score several runs early, then fall into swinging at the first pitch and getting shut out the rest of the way (other than a single run in the sixth ). Not a good sign from the offensive side of the ball. While we struggled to score after the first two innings; our aggy friends were pounding out 18 runs on their opening day opponents in an 18-2 victory.
I like the defense, but I'd much rather have an offense that scores consistently. That way if your pitching falters you know your sticks will pick them up.

i was impressed with the opening day crowd. very nice.

My wife and I came in from out of town for the opener. As far as the baseball is concerned, the Horns looked great. It was certainly more Augie-ball-ish than the last couple years. I'm quite optimistic about this team.

Now, as far as the DIsch is concerned, I was not pleased. I know I sound like a whiny alum but can we do something about all the bird crap on the seats? We sat down the right field line because we found that any seat under the awning was covered in bird crap. Seriously, someone needs to get out there with a pressure washer.
