If I move into a new house and invite all of my friends and family over for a party, should I expect that people will bring gifts? and if so is it rude to let people know that we have a fund setup to buy a new grill (or if enough is given an outdoor kitchen) and that would be preferred to anything else?

if you call it a "house warming" party I don't think it's unreasonable to mention "the fund" to people.

House warming gifts for a new place are pretty normal, but you shouldn't expect gifts

I guess it depends on how close you are to these people. If it were my set of friends I would simply mention it to them.

we had a housewarming party almost a year ago. a few people brought small gifts like candles, booze, and stuff like that, but i certainly wouldn't have expected my friends to fund a grill or an outdoor kitchen. if i had asked for that **** my friends would have taken their beer and left.

i imagine we run in different circles, though.

I was thinking it is sort of like a stock the bar type of party, except, I'll supply the beer, liquor, and raw meat and everyone else pitch in $5-$20 and we buy a nice rig.

I'd talk my dad into buying it for me, however I'd rather him get me the smoker or the basketball hoop
