It seems like the only official offers belong to Kennard(Irby's brother is one of his coaches) and Kirkpatrick(who was being recruiting by both CWM and CMA before they came to UT). The others like Edwin Baker, Marlon Brown, Bryce Brown, Lamar Miller, Cierre Woods, etc... seem to have gotten interest, and implied offers should they meet Mack, but not an official offer.
Come on four is very, very few. A lot might be 35 or 50 or more.
If we get confused by four, we are wimps. UT would benefit if we really tried to recruit OOS. To me that means you evaluate more than 50 and offer more than 20. If you get 3 to 5 top guys for year you most likely win one more game per year, maybe more.
you don't offer 20 out of staters and hope to get 3-4. There aren't that many that are significantly better then in staters. You offer 8-10 maybe and see what you get. You don't make 40-50 total offers.
Sometimes I think you guys get the idea that there is a lot of talent that is worlds better then the in state guys we already get. Are there better players? yes. Are they all interested in Texas-no.
In sales you don't expect to have success every time. Obviously you do research.... who is very good and may be interested in UT, but I'd have no trouble visiting with 50, offering 20 and expecting to get at least 4.
Even though there are many good players in Texas, we don't get them all. Look at the top 10 last year... very few picked UT.
Rivals is only one resource, but there are on average 12 to 14 Texans in the top 100 each year. Seems that there may be a few good players in other states.
When the athletic department brags that only 23 guys were offered to get 21 to sign, I question how hard they worked. Any salesman who had those numbers would either win every other National Championship or be considered too content or possibly lazy.
I have nothing against getting a few good OOS recruits but they need to commit right away or else we should go with Texas boys. No need to go through RP and DS cases again if we have good in state boys interested.
Another way of putting that would be: assistant coach prospects should be willing to take half pay to work at UT, Mack should want to stay here soo badly that he works for what a professor makes. BULL
Mack has changed the recruiting market a great deal, but you still have to play the game. Look at USC, they now get the early recruits, but also show patience with very good players who want to take a while.
I really don't see how the Darrell Scott situation hurt us..... I don't understand why people think we need to solidify the position as early as possible, especially DE.
Can someone explain how it hurts to go after Devon Kennard all the way up until February? We already have two commitments, IIRC, so what's the harm in waiting??????
I think we ought to offer those top guys and wait too. Perhaps the problem with waiting on a Kennard or a Scott is that you may end up not offering somebody else while you are waiting. That somebody else may decide to go where he has an offer and feels more valued rather than wait on a possible UT offer. You may not get either one in the end. That's a problem if it is a need position. UT could save back one or two just for that last minute top guy, but how many do you hold back? Of course all this is pure speculation on my part. I've got no information, just interest.
