One way car rental

Anyone do this. We are going to drive to Texas from NYC as my wife being from Honduras hasn't seen much of the east coast. I booked a car with Hertz but man. $900 for the week sounds a little steep. Any thoughts?

I have a buddy that had a one-way rental and didn't want to pay what the car rental joint was asking, so he rented the smallest Ryder truck he could find. When I pointed out that he probably lost the difference in gas money, he just said, "at least the ******** at the car rental place didn't get the money".

Buy a cheapo little beater, bring it down here and sell it. If you can't sell it, donate it and write it off on your income tax.

Rent the car, get the insurance, when you are done with the car smash it into a big ol' tree so thats its totaled. Problem solved.

Hell, buy a decent car -- say a $5,000 used Honda Accord.

Drive it here. Then, you either have a decent used car for a while, or you can sell it for pretty much what you got it for. Or you can even trade it in when you buy a car here. Odds are good that you'll end up less than $900 in the hole.
