Not to panic - every team drops a bomb every now and then. And they did win two of three from the Tiggers on this homestand. It counts as one loss in the standings, whether they lose by one run or ten.
The folks who should be in the panic mode are the Red Sox. They have not only lost sight of the Yankees, they've lost enough to let the Rangers creep into shouting distance for the Wild Card. Given the progress the Rangers have made this year - by all accounts, about a year ahead of schedule - making the playoffs, either as the AL West winners or as the Wild Card, would be a pretty significant accomplishment and would set the stage for a serious run in 2010.
I am amazed at how well the Rangers starters are doing. Eric Hurley doesn't get to pitch this year. He was still learning, but has one of the best arms in the organization. Brandon McCarthy, third starter, is injured. Benoit, the inning-eater from the bullpen for the last few years is on the DL all season.. Last year's closer, Frankie Francisco is on the DL and hasn't really been well all season. Ben Harrison, pressed into service as a starter, did well but is out for the second half of the season. Padilla was put on waivers in June. Thank goodness nobody claimed him. All this and the Rangers are getting the best pitching they've had in about the last 20 years.
