One or two day trips from London

I'm visiting my sister in May and she lives just outside of London. There are a few days where she will be working so I was planning on taking a few day trips or two day trips. I was thinking of traveling north to Scotland or to other cities throughout England.

Any suggestions?

Scotland would be a tough trip. You're looking at about 4-5 hours by train to get to Edinburgh, so you would lose a full day just getting there and back. If you could allocate 3 days, I would recommend it. Edinburgh is a great city.

Edinburgh is an amazing city...I went there last summer. I agree with Doug, that you would need three total days, especially if you're factoring in train travel time.

+1 for Bath. It is cool to see how pimped out the Romans had it back in the day and the engineering that went into it.

Clever is right on. Amsterdam. Fly there for a few bucks.

I've done the northern Scotland thing and its wonderful. It just takes some serious time. I wouldn't head there unless you had a week or so.

Paris is a possibility. A long day, but only 2.5 hours by trian.

Really, you options are limitless. Oxford, Bath, York, Canterbury, Windsor, Stratford, and many more choices are available depending upon your interests.
