I'm pretty sure that America's downfall will be because in the face of every global challenge or domestic problem, from climate change to record deficits, our voters demand a response that requires of them no personal sacrafice.

There is certainly personal sacrifice happening right now, but only by about half of the adult population. That simply won't work.

I think eveyone should have a stake no matter the size. If half of the population pays no taxes, then half of the population has no cares about ridiculous spending, like outfitting the POTUS with campaign busses.

Officially we have 15% of the country at or below the poverty rate. My math could be wrong but it seems to me that this means 35% of the country is above the poverty rate, yet paying no taxes.

When I first read this article I thought, "Well, as long as it is in their budget." Then I remembered we have not had a budget during the Obama administration. Love that transparency!

That 35% is paying no income taxes. It pays property taxes by paying rent, sales taxes on everything but food. And various taxes pulled out of their paychecks for stuff like medicare and ss. And a lot of their kids end up in the military for lack of other options. Getting killed or blown up is a tax of sorts.

People should quit feeling sorry for the poor prosperous people who get all the benefits of living in a free enterprise society and get to keep most of what we make. The poor get to keep their distance.

I wouldn't care of their tax rate was 0.5%. I just think everyone should care how the government spends their money. If you pay zero, you have no reason to care.

If it's any consolation Shiner, all the taxpayers combined only have to pay about 2/3 the cost of government over the last 30 years. Sadly enough, if we are going to pay the full freight instead of putting it on the kids' credit card, most of the money is going to have to come from people who have something and or earn something.

The middle class sacraficed (a lot more than a 35 percent tax bracket) to win World War II, Win the Cold War and get out of the Depression. But as Stephen Colbert so artfully pointed out in a discussion of whether to raise his taxes or cutback on funding for health care of aging veterans, he reasoned that the sacrafices should come from people used to making sacrafices.

Sounds like there's a lot of weak sisters on here who are worried about Obama campaigning. He's so doomed, whatcha worrying for? I would think you'd be more worried about policy than busses.

I decry government waste regardless of the party, so I do not consider myself a hypocrite in this area. Do you have specific instances where past presidents, dem or repub, built themselves campaign buses on taxpayer dollars - especially after suggesting we need to raise taxes and tighten our belts in the SOTU speech?

This President's campaign slogan should be, "Do as I say, not as I do."

I have sacrificed. 34% of my income is paid in income taxes alone, no deductions because apparently fairness isnt a factor in determining the tax code. This of course doesnt include the hundreds of other taxes that go into all my purchases and general services. i recycle and use as many energy efficient products as i can find. Why should i pay more because some idiots in washington cant balance a checkbook and prefer to fatten their own wallets as opposed to representing the best interests of the tax paying majority and our own national and global economic interests?
