One Day in Berlin

Will be in Berlin for business part of next week and hoping to have one day for sightseeing. Any suggestions on "must sees" within the downtown area? My hotel appears to be on one of the main streets -- Friedrichstraße -- as a point of reference for those familiar with the city. Thanks in advance.

It has been a while since I was in Berlin but here are some things to consider.

Go to the Brandenburg gate. You can go see where Checkpoint Charlie used to be and they have a small museum at that site. We walked the city and found a few of the locations where parts of the wall existed. There was a guard tower down one of the the side streets (not sure where it was though). There was also an outdoor type wall/memorial on the location where the SS used to keep prisoners (I believe it was across the street from the old Luftwaffe headquarters building).

Hop on Bus 100. I believe you can catch at Bahnhof Zoo, but double-check the transit map. The bus will take you by a lot of the famous sites -- Unter den Linden, the Reichstag, Brandenburger Gate, the Tiergarten, and that big tower where Obama gave a speech, among others. Taking the 100 is like taking a tour bus, but you don't have to pay for a tour guide. Buy a day pass, and when you see something cool, hop off the bus, and get back on when you're done.

IIRC, Kreuzberg was the place to go for nightlife in the late 90s; don't know if that's still the case. If you pop into a bar and ask around, you should be able to find out where the hotspots are.

I'd take the Walking Tour that starts at the McDonald's across the street from the Zoo Station and shows you nearly everything you'd want to see.

Then hit a museum or two, the Olympic/Rebuilt stadium, and/or the Reichstag building.

The above things are interesting. Also see the Egyptology museum which has the bust of Nefartiti (spelling) among other treasures.

The view from the top of the space needle looking thing on the East side (to show how superior commies were - how'd that work out losers?) is a good way to spend an hour.

The Checkpoint Charlie museum is very neat if you're interested in Cold War history.

And whatever you do, don't ride the public transport without a ticket. They do lots of spot checks and make everyone show their ticket.

Thanks again for all the tips. Got back last Thurs night. Only had Wed afternoon to see the sights so I paid 20 euros and jumped on one of the sightseeing busses. Got some good pics of the Brandenburg Gate, some still standing parts of the Wall, the Checkpoint Charlie area on Fredrichstrasse, Reichstag, the Under der Linden and much more. Had several good business dinners and drank my share on Berliner Pilsner. Good experience, good trip.
