On High Beer Prices

If you've been to the store recently, you know that the price of beer has skyrocketed.

According to an S&P study, 44% of the cost of a six pack comes from taxes ----- more than the cost of the labor and the ingredients combined.

A combination of high local and federal taxes—including tariffs on everything from the hops to barrels—makes taxes the single most expensive component in beer.

As a beer drinker- this sucks

As an economist- we can point out like other vices- beer costs the tax payer mucho dinero for its consequences- so charging those who consume it is only fair. And yes- that means responsible drinkers like myself who don't get drunk while driving, fat and die young are subsidizing those who do.

I thought this was going to have something to do with the severe weather this year and how it has affected crops which is affecting beer prices.

Good thing about beer is that there are so many choices available. My suggestion is buy local 80% of the time and experiment here or there.

I know there was discussion regarding about a $0.50 tax per six pack to help fund Obamacare, has that kicked in yet?

I am not sure it is in the bill or not, I haven't had time to read it all yet, anybody know if that tax has kicked in yet?

We should have a BEER rebellion!! No more beer taxes!!

We get f*cked on beer in the US. I pin a lot of the blame on the Baptists, but they can't do this to us alone. They have to have help.

I didn't know how bad it was until I went to socialist, high-tax Europe. Our biggest producers of beer (Coors, Bud, and Miller) make beer that tastes like rhinoceros piss. It's awful. To get anything respectable, you have to buy imported or US microbrew, and it's all expensive - even the piss.

To put it in perspective, I went to Venice, Italy last year and walked into a small convenience store. This wasn't even Germany, Czech Republic, Austria, or some place known for great beer - just a dumpy little shop in Italy. They had about 50 options of 1/2 liter bottles of beer. I bought a single 1/2 liter bottle of Hofbrau for .90 Euro (about $1.30). At Spec's, that exact same beer in a 1/2 liter single bottle is about $3.00. WTF??? And the locally made Italian beer was even cheaper (and far better than the stale piss we make here). Sad.
