Olympics puzzlement

Why does Gabby Douglas not get a gold medal for each of the events she 'won' on her way to the all-around title? Did they used to do that in gymnastics?

Three seperate events.

Team Competition
All Around
Individual Apparatus

Even though they seem to do the same routines for all 3.

It's another event, as stated. And I think some points up to that may count. I read a whole page on the competition but can't digest it all.

I predicted a day or two ago that Gabby would win the all around. She began to appear as the best, and I really do like her. She has total attitude and character and personality, and I could not be happier for her and her whole family. They absolutely deserve this honor.

That said... I've had enough freaking water polo and beach volleyball. Can someone get this stupid **** out of the Olympics or put it on back channels. I don't have a list in front of me, but I'm of the opinion that half the Olympic events are a crock.

I would much rather they focus on classic events and show more of them. This 2-person beach volleyball has to be the dumbest thing ever contrived other than past times on a real beach.

Okay found a list, not sure if it's complete. Since I have a break in work, I'll waste some time here ...

The A-Team sports actually belong in the Olympics and that should show as much as possible on 3 to 4 prime NBC channels.
Archery
Boxing
Cycling Track
Diving
Equestrian
Fencing
Gymnastics
Polo ...not freaking water polo, but the real thing
Rowing
Sailing
Swimming
Track and Field, Penthaelon, Decathelon
Volleyball... REAL volleyball
Synchronized swimming
Weightlifting
Wrestling

Minor a-Team shown here and there
Badminton
Basketball
Shooting
Table tennis
- from B-team below, maybe add:
Cricket
Croquet
Lacrosse
Judo

The B-team sports that should go away or only be seen on back channels and not waste prime viewing time.

Basically, we never hear nor see these except in newspaper reports:

Baseball (I can't even begin to speak on this one)
Basque pelota (old, old, old, old... game...limited in where it even exists or means anything)
Canoeing and kayaking (biggest joke as you cannot create a realistic setting.. how about rock climbing and create a 1,000 foot wall?)
Cricket (possible A-team i guess)
Croquet (really?? olympic sport?... okay maybe for real old school)
Football (Soccer) (oh, Lord, puleeeze please just go the heck away like forever... there is an european stage for this and the freaking worrrrrrrrrl cuuuuuup.... )
Golf (as dumb and dumber than baseball)
Handball (college game... fraternities, P.E... executive floor in the gym... I do not consider this a global sport)
Hockey (field) (total, complete, absolute BS)
Jeu de paume (is this the 17th century?)
Judo (Yeah, maybe)
Lacrosse (maybe)
Rackets (whatever the hell that is)
Roque (like Croquet... play it sometimes depending on host country)
Rugby union (no way)
Rugby sevens (no way, part II)
Softball (give me a break)
Taekwondo (not interested.. .how can there be a standard martial arts?)
Tennis (enough already.. has no place in olympics... it has a world stage 12 months a year)
Triathlon (dumb, dumb and dumber ,,, three dumbs on this... )
Tug of war (well, how about Canasta or Bridge?)
Water motorsports (Yeah, for Florida and Texas maybe)

If you want to go modern and juice up the Olympics, which will only create sports limited to Yuppies.... then...

all of these both women and men competitions.

Base jumping -- use a skyscraper in the vicinity, if cliffs are not nearby
Individual and Team mountain climbing -- if mountains are not far away... make it a speed event.
Rock climbing -- natural settings if available, or construct an artificial wall on a building, up to 500 feet
3-gun competition (pistol, shotgun, rifle) -- and juice it up with hi-tech lavish firearms, go real macho
Paintball competition !!

Sorry Hu, you lost me when you put Badminton and Table Tennis above Beach Volleyball and Water Polo.

On a seperate note, those water polo athletes have to be some of the best athletes in the games. Holy crap!

Hu, .that's a solid A-List. I'm pretty much lock step with you on all of those.

Track is my favorite, but sports that I think some people really enjoy watching that are kind of hypnotizing:

1) Archery - kind of like curling for the winter olympics.

2) Skeet and Trap shooting - seeing clay pigeons vaporized half a second apart...amazing marksmanship

3) Cross Country Equestrian - unfortunately, the most TV friendly equestrian discipline is only one part of the team competition. Still though, seeing thoroughbreds broadcast cinematically at a full gallop through the English countryside is pretty cool.

4) Fencing - specifically foil and epee which have longer "rallies"

5) Weightlifting - I saw some 125lbs dude lift 275lbs right over his head. That is ridiculous. The crazy thing is, those lightweight guys aren't jacked up meatheads....they look like small versions of NFL wide receivers.

6) Men's gymnastics - I respect the athleticism of the women, but I'm not a fan of the prancing and dancing portions. The men, however, it's jaw dropping the acrobatics and displays of strength these guy do.

7) Ice hockey - I know it's a winter olympic sport, but the ice hockey tournament and the gold medal match is by far the best team sport in the olympics.

These olympic sports have a few things in common:

a) crazy displays of athletic freakishness, e.g. weightlifting, gymnastics

b) super cool equipment, e.g. archery, equestrian, fencing

c) uncanny precision - e.g. shooting, archery

d) fast paced team action - e.g. hockey

Beach volleyball - Completely agree...boring as hell. No rallies, no real "wow" feats of athleticism. They're playing a sport that was mandatory in PE in elementary and junior high...but watered it down.

I do think in the right format olympic golf could be something else. Here what I would do:

1) Have the individual stroke event the first weekend - gold silver, bronze to the top 3.
2) The 6 countries with the lowest combined scores (4 or 6 golfers per country) advance to a team match play tournament in the second week
3) Two lowest countries get a bye to the semi
4) Thursday morning twosome matches 3 vs 6 seed and 4 vs 5 seed
5) Thursday afternoon single matches 3 vs 6 seed and 4 vs 5 seed
6) Friday semi-final matches 1 vs 5 or 6 and 2 vs 3 or 4 in the same format
7) Saturday final matches in the same format.

That would be pretty cool.

Some of these sports, like track and field haven't started yet.

Your list is too long for me to look everything up, and I do agree with much, esp when they show gymnastics after the Olympic part is over, just for ratings! Grrrr.

Obviously what they show is rating-based, but they give the real sport/Olympc fans little credit. Why don't they try showing some of the other sports--they might find we like them!

They need to bring back baseball and softball but I guess unlike Spain and Athens the British couldn't afford to build stadiums.

As maybe one of the older posters here (70 in October), here's a take from the crotchity point of view.

1) Archery - kind of like curling for the winter olympics - especially since those bows and arrows are nothing like the archery we all admired and respected in the days of William Tell and Robin Hood. Get rid of all the accouterments that all but pull the bowstring and it might be worth something.

5) Weightlifting - I saw some 125lbs dude lift 275lbs right over his head. That is ridiculous. The crazy thing is, those lightweight guys aren't jacked up meatheads....they look like small versions of NFL wide receivers.

6) Men's gymnastics - I respect the athleticism of the women, but I'm not a fan of the prancing and dancing portions (then wait until you get to the twirling ribbons - glorified Fruit of the Loom commercial). The men, however, it's jaw dropping the acrobatics and displays of strength these guy do (but without the wooden solder displays)

7) Ice hockey - I know it's a winter olympic sport, but the ice hockey tournament and the gold medal match is by far the best team sport in the olympics (is that what they did when it got cold on the Acropolis?)

These olympic sports have a few things in common:

a) crazy displays of athletic freakishness, e.g. weightlifting, gymnastics

b) super cool equipment, e.g. archery, equestrian, fencing (then save it for the equipment Olympics - and you saw what super cool swim gear did for swimming)

c) uncanny precision - e.g. shooting, archery (without all the assisting crap hanging around)

The lady trampoline competitor is from my hometown in East Texas but moved to Louisiana a couple years ago to train. I don't know if she was 'born and raised there' or just there for a time, but according to my sister (still there) the town put up a banter and sort of claimed her.

That town... Newton... when I was growing up I went to the house of the town mayor -- his son was a grade ahead of me... last name... Didrickson.

In the hall upstairs was a full sized portrait of a female golfer -- the head of this household was the brother of Babe Didrickson Zaharias, of Beaumont. Where I was born.

That's that story.

The Handball is what you call team handball. It's played all over the world. It too has many world championships and European championships, usually during the winter months, as it's played indoors. It was invented in Denmark.
