Olympic 'China Syndrome' is Golden

I saw a bit of the Women's team gymnastics wiating for the men's swimming relay. Those Chinese athletes looked 8 years old. It was not a beautiful thing to watch. They did not get real high in the air either on the parallel bars or the balance beam. They just don't have the all around strength.

I saw some pregame footage from the stadium where Argentina was going to play their soccer game. The wide shots that showed the air in the background made it look like there was a forest fire on the scale of the one in California earlier this year.

China's cities are shitholes.

Why do so many people care if the girls are or aren't 16? I understand it's a new rule, but that does change the fact that those girls kicked the US team's ***.

As for the men's team, I can't believe you would say they are underpowered

Rules are rules and need to be enforced. The Chinese probably know this better than anyone else on the planet. Second, age makes a huge difference in gymnastics. A 12 y/o girl who hasn't reached puberty has much more flexibility in her body than an 18 y/o.

For a split second I couldnt help thinking about Mangino on high bar.....and it was not pretty.

Anyway....As Eating said rules are rules. I'm sure there are numerous girls under the age of 16 that the USA and other countries would have loved bringing along. Sure, Chinese girls do tend to look younger but saying a couple of those girls are 16 is a joke....Not to mention telling us that the tall one on their team is a human and not an alien.

There is no way those girls were 16, and probably not even 14... Its a rule, you gotta follow it. How any judge in that building could think they were the right age is beyond me.

I understand rules are rules, I'm just saying I can't believe that many people are pointing to that as some sort of reason they won. I mean it's not like they're using steroids or anything.

I dont know if there is some factor of maturity that limits a gymnists ability or not. I think one of the other issues is that there are some outstanding US gymnists that are under 16 that could have contributed, but were too young. I dont know if they would have beaten China or not, but everyone should be following the same rules.

Halstead - The Chinese are a great team...Not taking that away from them....But if they are using underage girls they are given access to another pool of talent that other countries aren't using.

I agree that rules are rules and should be obeyed by everyone. I think it is wrong and unfairl to limit the age at 16 because I think if a 7 year old can win they ought to let her have her shot. But the rule has been passed and should have been enforced. I wonder what would have happened if the situation had been reversed and the USA had won the gold with someone who was under 16.

Have to wonder - if they lip-synced the singing of their national anthem, maybe they've come up with a way to bar-sync in gymnastics, and are using 16-year-olds in 12-year-old bodies so that they are compliant.

excuses. so if the chinese girls were older, they would've busted their *** on the floor exercise?

the US had every chance to win, but they choked. leave it be.

What's funny is that it's my understanding that the reason the made the age limit is because the younger girls have more fragile bones and thus more susceptible to injury... yet it's the US team that seems to keep sticking their gymnasts out there to compete on torn up feet...

Anyway, I wish they'd do away with the rule. They don't have that rule any any other sport. I think it's also unfortunate that it basically limits girls to only having one shot at the olympics, whichever one lands between their 16th and 20th birthday. I'd much rather march out a bunch of 14 year olds and then have them be the team leaders of tomorrow, than a bunch of inexperienced 18-20 year olds who end up choking when the pressure got to be too great for them.

Anyway thats just my opinion, and I realize it doesn't really matter since rules are rules as you all keep reminding me...

The reason why the US choked was because that one girl that had the worst scores couldn't handle the pressure... you could see it on her face since the first exercise... you didn't see that on the younger girls... they have no fear and don't feel the pressure like the older ones do... THAT IS, in my opinion, one of the main reasons why china is cheating with the younger girls...
