I no longer need mine, and was wondering if anyone knew of a family that would like a free one. I know most folks have moved on to the more advanced systems, but I'm sure that there's some folks out there that would like a free system with a host of games and all, and I'd rather give it away to someone like that than to retire to the trash heap.

If anyone has any ideas, let me know here or PM me.

I like to give to Safe Place of Austin. It would go to a person trying to make their own way without an abusive spouse or circumstance. This may go well for a child of theirs in that they could not afford one. I also give things like plates, blankets, clothes, silverware just to name a few. Anything that goes towards starting a new life. They are about to get a TV in the next week or so.

It is places like this that go under the radar of the big umbrella of Goodwill and Salvation Army. Both good charities but both get first nod most times. Hope this helped.

Here is the link to the wish list for Safe Place. Scroll down past the Hot List and I think the video game player would fit well somewhere in that. It will make some kids year!

The old Xbox is an awesome system if you can get it hacked, there are some soft mods etc, but I have 2 that I use as media centers...I store all my shows/movies/music/etc on a networked HDD and stream everything to the tvs through the xbox. This (XBMC) grew out of that...i'd be lost without it if I didn't have my old xboxes.

Though giving it to a family who can use it is probably better..but if anyone has an old xbox laying around I would definitely look into modding it.

Is it any better than just using a desktop PC (like one with 7 Ultimate or Vista Ultimate or XP Media Center) to do the same thing?

I don't know if it's "better", but it's a lot easier and cheaper to get your hands on an old xbox, and you have the added benefit of not using your home pc's resources.

I looked into it, but quite frankly, I don't really do a lot of video downloading, and it just didn't seem worth the effort.

Basically what Hornbud said...you can get them (already hacked) for less then $100...I've been using mine for this purpose for years.
