Old men hoopin'

I was playing ball with some recent grads and I sucked. I use to be able to run circles around everyone, could dunk, but had a pretty avg. shot because I lifted too much without stretching. That game doesn't translate real well to middle age. How do you know when you are getting too old to play? I still feel like if I could take off some time, I could get back in shape.

I can still give my 20 year old son a serious run at 1 on 1. My Olajuwon signature baseline turn around fade away shot is unstoppable.

Sounds like you're out of shape rather than too old. I don't know how old you are, but I think if you keep in shape and keep playing you won't notice an significant decrease in skills, unless you're playing professionally.
You may tear muscles more easily, and your recovery time will definitely increase, however.

I'm over 35 and had 22 points friday night in the open church league I play in. I know, I know...but the point is, I can still drive and hit jumpers because I stretch a few times a week. It makes a big difference in everything I do when I stretch. Plus I stay half way in shape through the year.

i agree stretching is huge. i've started stretching about every day or every other and can touch my toes with ease now. it makes my back and everything else feel better. plus, i can take some kids to school up at TCU where i ball on occassion. but i can only last 1-2 full court games because that's just too much for me.
