This article details an early-morning tanker/barge collision which has spilled 160,000 gallons of thick, hard to clean-up oil into the Galveston bay area. The Bolivar-Galveston ferry is closed, as is the Texas City dike. The oil may be heading towards Bolivar, an important shorebird nesting site for American Oystercatchers and other species. Not a good situation at present, but the tides or winds may take the oil in a different direction, or the crews may contain most of it, too early to tell.

Now oil, which called "bottom oil," or bottom fuel, has been found washing up on the Texas City dike beach, and on the east end of Galveston near Boddicker Road, and up to eleven miles out to sea. The spill will wash up on the coast for an undetermined time. Crews are deploying booms and containment equipment, in large quantities, but this type of oil can't really be contained, apparently.
A cold front blew through the area which pushed the oil out to sea, and high winds hindered containment efforts.
The ship channel is closed, with ships stacking up at both ends, although they let a cruise ship dock in Galveston.
This could affect gasoline prices if the ships are prohibited from moving through the channel for more than a day or two.
