We are the Massachusetts of basketball. Massachusetts has great pro football (the New England Patriots) and at best, occasionally good college football (Boston College) with no modern national titles (Harvard won a bunch before the 1940s). Our state has great pro basketball with lots of good out of state and foreign players (Spurs, Mavs, Rockets) but, at best, occasionally good and rarely great college basketball. The best players in this state do not generally pick Texas schools and high school kids are more interested in football, baseball or other sports (mostly football).
List of state of Texas final fours:
1943 Texas
1947 Texas
1948 Baylor
1950 Baylor
1956 SMU
1966 UTEP (won the national title but this is the exception since they were one of the few integrated teams... which was something of an advantage in basketball)
1967 Houston
1968 Houston
1982 Houston
1983 Houston
1984 Houston
2003 Texas
Larry Brown, who is a hall of fame coach and has already been caught cheating at SMU, could not get out of the first round with great coaching and probably paid players against what was thought to be the easiest at large opponent today. Baylor could not beat a sun belt team from georgia, and Texas could not win what considered a tossup of sorts (lower seed but vegas favorite). Obviously SFA and Texas Southern were not supposed to win. I guess this is all a step up from a few years ago when no Texas team got in the NCAA tournament.
The state of Texas went 0-5 in the NCAA tournament and finished 3-10 in all tournaments combined. Our state finished with wins against basketball powers Montana, Florida Gulf Coast and UNC Wilmington.
The point of this is like Massachusetts in college football, we are not a great college basketball state. It's tough to win big at any school in this state (otherwise someone else would have consistently won big somewhere in this state over the 30 years or so). Maybe, with the right coach, we can be the first Texas school to be a consistent national power. However, that is going to be an uphill battle for that coach at UT or any Texas school.
