Offensive Gameplan vs FAU

Forget McChiles, forget the third receiver, forget trick plays. Texas is going to come out in this game with two tight ends and try to run over the FAU defense. Mack is scared of their QB and of having 2 freshmen at safety. So he wants to keep the ball away from FAU, much like the start of the 07 Tech game. One clue to this strategy is the move of Greg Smith to TE. Yes, a couple of other TE's are out, but I think this gave them an excuse to lineup both Greg Smith and Peter Ullman as bookends. Vondrell at tailback. The only question would be FB (maybe none). They have decided the way to ensure a victory is smashmouth, ball control football. This will continue against UTEP. Arkansas has too good of a DL however, so lets hope the first two get out of hand so they can get some of the young receivers in there to get ready for the piggies.

Just my opinion. Anyway, it's what I would do.

That doesn't make a whole lot of sense. If you want to play "smashmouth football," why wouldn't you use Chiles, by far our best running QB? He presents major match-up problems for their LBs, esp. if we have two TEs and a FB.

I'm also not too concerned about their QB. Smith racked up some good numbers last year, but he has an unorthodox, 3/4 throwing motion. He was not recruited by anyone but FAU. I expect Orakpo, Bobino, Muckleroy & Co. to tee off on their OL and "rak up" 6-8 sacks.

Mack has stated in the recent past that "scoring more points" is his new gameplan. Not running, not passing- scoring. Works for me.

I just fear for the life of the FAU QB. They have some big linemen on O, but I'm sure their two-deep will not last the game. I'm thinking K-state blitzmania style D.

Don't be surprised to see something like we saw vs. Ariz. Snake to start this game vs. FAU. We pound them on O, but we do pass the ball and put up points right away. On D - no place for them to run the ball & we rush the hell outta of the QB... he is out of synch and running for his life on most plays

Don't care what the plan is so long as it is kicking ***. Probably nothing too creative, but we should see all the RBs and WRs get some PT.

More than the O I am looking forward to the D. The previously stated defenders should cause the FAU line to **** their pants, and we should see some of the second string in the box. I really am looking forward to seeing the secondary though. I know this is everyone's biggest interest but I just had to say it. Should be a damn fun game!!

I think you all are giving FAU way too much credit. Did you see how grab-*** they looked in that ridiculous video? The one that said:

"And next on our plate was Oklahoma State, but we came up short"

Yeah they came up short. They got mudholed to the tune of 42-6 by a team that came in 4th in the Big 12 South. Greg Davis could pick 3 passing plays and 3 running plays and beat these losers by 4 TDs. Enough with the handwringing already!

I expect something akin to a Rice offensive gameplan. Nothing unexpected. Push them off the line and do what we want.

That, and also, make them eat s**t.

...And KICK THEIR ***!

Dimes ot donuts they'll get cute with the 'Q package', or what ever.

Play will be inside the 35, when FAU is defending the NEZ.

It'll be a trick play, designed to score in the NEZ... eye candy to accomodate the 98K fans in the new DKR_RMS.

Are you saying that you think that Chiles is not a much better ("by far") runner than Colt? Colt is much slower, much less elusive, has much less power, and is more prone to fumble.

Stats are useful when used properly but you have to put them in context, right? Part of the reason Colt can get some good running stats (especially against weaker teams) is that the opposition D really disrespects his running ability and fears his passing ability. The opposite is true for Chiles (i.e. they fear his running and disrespect his passing).

If you were just kidding, sorry for not getting the joke.

A couple of screens, a couple outs, a slant or two, oh yeah and some zone read.

Now on defense, i predict death to opposing offense.

Truck:

The relative throwing abilities of Colt and chiles have nothing to do with their running abilities. We are not discussing who is the better all around QB. colt is a better passer than Chiles (as I already said in this thread) but that has nothing to do with the point being discussed: whether or not Chiles is by far a better runner than colt.

I understand the statistical argument being advanced that Colt was an effective runner in some games but am not convinced that he is anywhere near as good a runner as Chiles. I know this because I have seen both Colt and Chiles run and Chiles runs way better.

It is easier to pile up statistics when the opposition disrespects your running abilities to the extent that they fail to account for you in their running D scheme, when the D really, really wants you to run.

I would love to hear from anybody else who thinks that Chiles is not, by far, a better runner than Colt.

Colt was not classified as a dual purpose QB when he was recruited and is not a dual purpose QB now. Colt is really good at opportunity draws and rolling out but I would not want him running the QB zone read against OU very much.

Unless a miracle has occurred, opposing teams now know that Chiles cannot throw, resulting in 10-man lines if he is QB without Colt in the game, resulting is less rushing stats for Chiles.

Good rushing stats for Colt don't prove that Chiles is not a far better runner than Colt. I contend that Ds want Colt to run because they feel he can be hurt, that he can be forced to fumble and that he is not much of a threat as a runner so they don't account for his running in their D (i.e. Ds have to focus on the most serious threats first).

But the point that we are discussing is whether Chiles is a far better runner than Colt. Chiles might line up at QB, WR, or TB. He can lineup at TB because he is an excellent runner. Chiles could play TB for a lot of div 1 teams. Colt could never get a job as a TB for a div 1 team. Colt could not get a job as a TB for a good high school team.. That is OK because Colt is a QB but let's not confuse some good rushing stats (against mostly weak rushing Ds) for Colt and think that means that he is in the same league as chiles when it comes to running.

Bohls reports in the AAS that the UT coaching staff voted Chiles their number 1 draft pick when they did their Big Board exercise recently. That confidence was probably not based on Chiles' great passing.

Having said that, it won't take a miracle for chiles to improve his passing from last year. For one thing, he has nowhere to go but up. He played QB one year in high school so his upside his huge. From what I've seen on the Mack Brown site, his passing has already improved a bunch from last year. It would also be quite simple to help chiles in his passing by stressing short passing more than intermediate passing in play selection, formations, and personnel. A big part of chiles' problem passing (because of his inexperience) is just reading the D and deciding where to throw the ball. Throwing the ball short to explosive athletes and big receivers is much, much simpler to do than mastering the intermediate passing game and yet still keeps the D honest (they can't put 10 men on the line to stop the run, for example).

I think the plan is to withstand the surge and try to keep it close until the fourth quarter.

Hey, it's worked for years, well, most of the time.
