HOUSTON, Texas -- The Texas Longhorns were unable to overcome a seven-run second inning by the Rice Owls and dropped a 13-6 decision in a 14-inning exhibition game at Reckling Park on Sunday.
The contest was tied 2-2 heading into the bottom of the second inning before the Owls exploded for seven runs.
Texas scored two runs in the top of the second with an RBI single by Kyle Lusson and a bases-loaded walk by Brandon Loy.
The Longhorns scored a pair of unearned runs in the 10th inning with RBI by Michael Torres and Brandon Belt.
Texas capped its scoring with two runs in the 14th inning. Kevin Lusson drove in a run with a single and Torres scored on an attempted double steal in which Kevin Lusson was caught at second base.
Freshmen Jordan Etier and Morgan Mickan paced the Horns with two hits apiece.
After freshman Taylor Jungmann gave up nine runs in the first two innings, the Horns rebounded to give up just four runs over the next 11 innings. Keith Shinaberry worked a scoreless inning, giving up one hit while striking out one. Brandon Workman worked two scoreless innings, scattering two hits while striking out two. Stayton Thomas worked one shutout frame, striking out two while allowing one hit. Austin Wood blanked Rice over three hitless innings, while striking out two.
Texas wraps up fall action next Sunday with a noon contest against the Texas State Bobcats at UFCU Disch-Falk Field, where fans can catch the Longhorns in action for the first time on their new FieldTurf playing surface.
