The Occupy Wall Street protesters, having been relieved of their camping privileges in Zuccotti Park (located in Manhattan), have regathered their forces in what may well be the beginning of a last stand before the winter weather kicks in in earnest. So far, at least 177 of the protesters have been arrested, with seven police officers being injured by the protesters. Numerous acts of violence have been instigated by the OWS protesters. And now they are rapidly being transported to their new camping grounds in the city jail.
Once again, I support these people's right to protest and their right to free speech must be protected. And it appears that Mayor Bloomberg and other mayors across the country are bending over backwards to try to be accommodating along these lines. However, it also appears that the behavior of these people is in too many cases violating acceptable standards for health, sanitation and the public safety. They are doing themselves and their cause a real disservice with this sort of behavior.
One might think that elected leaders who have supported these protests so far might come forward and call for the protesters to behave in a more orderly manner here. But so far, that does not appear to be happening.
