Obligatory Pot Scene

Is it just me, or are movies thowing in a pot smoking seen frequently now? In the past you might expect it in certain types of movies, but now even romantic comedies are including drugs. Two recent examples are "Going the Distance" with Justin Long and Drew Barrymore and "Life as We Know it" with Josh Duhamel and Katherine Heigl.

To me drug use was not necessary in those films. Is this an attempt to push an agenda or does everybody smoke pot these days?

Speaking of pot ...

"Everybody smoke pot" at the end of "I Am the Walrus" is one of the greatest mondegreens in all of modern pop music. Lennon himself sought to quash the rumor in a 1980 interview with Playboy magazine, but it lives on to this day.

INTERVIEWER: "What about the chant at the end of the song: Smoke pot, smoke pot, everybody smoke pot'?"

LENNON: "No, no, no. I had this whole choir saying, 'Everybody's got one, everybody's got one.' But when you get 30 people, male and female, on top of 30 cellos and on top of the Beatles' rock 'n roll rhythm section, you can't hear what they're saying."

INTERVIEWER: "What does 'everybody got'?"

LENNON: "Anything. You name it. One penis, one vagina, one *******-- you name it."

My guess, is the writer thinks it might make the characters, who are boring and milquetoast seem a little bit more cool and edgy.

Are scences in which alcohol is observed to be consumed now "obligatory alcohol scenes"? What about tobacco use?

If anything, most American movies have obligatory violence scenes.

Per a recent Harper's Findings, 19% of US teens smoked a cigarette last month; 21% had a joint. The US has successfully made tobacco more difficult for teens to procure. The zero-tolerance nutjobs speak loudly.

Pot is like alcohol in terms of how it is viewed by society. That's just the way it is.

I have basically ended my life with abuse of alcohol and weed would not have ended up damaging me as badly. I've had several temper tantrums while under the influence of ETOH, but never when high.

My boy has never smoked anything and has never drank any alcohol. If he is going to try somethimg, I'd rather it be weed.
