Obama's personal safety

I sincerely fear for Obama's personal safety. THis country has seen the assasination of every single figure that brought historic change. Be it Lincoln, JFK, Bobby Kennedy and MLK. I hope they provide as much protection as they do to the Prez to Barack in order to protect him.

There are a lot of black folk who believe that extremist groups would try to end the life of Obama as soon as he is a viable national candidate. That would be tragic for this country and God help this country.

I try not to think about it and Michelle Obama was just on CNN talking about just this topic.

She was very genuine in her rebutal of the fears. Using MLK as an example of someone who REALLY had to be fearful.

They are protecting Barack

I've also thought about this- if he were killed I can only imagine how far back that would set race relations in this country.

I shook B. Clinton's hand just after midnight the morning that he was elected president in 1992. Although it was cool, it spooked me how I didn't go through security and I was in a mob and able to get close enough to shake his hand. ANYONE could have been right there, slipped a gun waist level between people, pulled the trigger, dropped the gun, and gotten out of there in the hysteria. I think that security has improved since then... but it was VERY lax that night/morning.

Lurker, your comment is indeed assinine even if made in jest. Regardless of one's personal belief about the direction any of our president's have taken our country, NONE of them should have to worry about assination.

I too have thought about it and figure it is in the back of a lot of people's minds. I believe, however, that the level of security and the capability of that security has improved dramatically from the sixties and before.

I remember being on I-35 one day and all of the sudden seeing more police units than I ever have before - shutting down the freaking freeway. My memory exaggerates but I recall hundreds of motorcycle units, cars, and perhaps a helicopter. Later that day I learned that Dick Cheney flew out of Austin-Bergstrom. The level of protection was unbelievable and this was for a vice president. We've come along way since open top limousines.

I am 24 and too young to know what it must feel like to have an inspiring leader taken from us. I trust that will remain the case.

BattleshipTexas:

LBJ lived to 65.
Bobby Kennedy lived to 43.
John Kennedy lived to 46.

I wonder if LBJ's longer track record had anything to do with him not being shot by an assassin early in his political career...

And, as has already been discussed, RFK and JFK got plenty done in their shortened lives.

Like someone said, hillary as VP would solve most of the issues. A black VP would also negate many of the same issues. Of course, a lot of people, the democratic party bigwigs included, would probably balk at a black pres AND VP.

Charles Sumner
Thad Stevens
Frederick Douglas
FDR
James Farmer
Cesar Chavez

Just to name a few who were not assasinated. The Founding Fathers brought a little historic change of their own, and no loyalists assassinated them.

I understand the point, but there is no reason to resort to hyperbole.

What is amazing to me is that on April 29th, he had no security, public or private. He came from the airport to the convention center for the California Democratic convention in a rented mini-van with a couple of campaign operatives. My job when he got to the convention center was to get him from caucus room to caucus room as quickly as possible. It ended up easy because the caucus rooms were upstairs away from the crowds.

Although I joked with my wife that I would dodge any bullets, I never worried while I was standing next to him. It was probably because I was so excited to talk to him and to watch him work the various caucus rooms, but it was also because he does not talk the politics of division. As WP stated, it seems like it would be harder to build up sufficient anger to want to assassinate someone who is preaching unity.

But I do certainly understand that simply being black may be enough for a wacko to attempt the unthinkable, so I was happy to read that the day after the Cal Dem convention that the Secret Service began to protect him.

In a subsequent trip to SD by Michelle, she discussed this issue. She stated that it was certainly a factor in their decision whether or not to run. She stated that having the Secret Service details give her comfort, but also serves as a constant reminder that her husband’s job as a candidate and hopefully the President can be a dangerous job. But together they decided that the “fierce urgency of now” overrode the dangers he will face.

At the same convention, I watched the Secret Service protect Hillary. WP is correct, they are very good at their job.

Wow! It's OK for Obama people to wear tin foil hats and no one tries to marginalize them with talk of black helicopters.

"Hillary is going to win the nomination and Obama will fade away into history"
Obama wins now or in 4 years when he has more experence like Gov of IL.

My uncle was one of Richard Nixon's primary bodyguards early in his career as a Secret Service agent. He also guarded Tricia Nixon, as well as Anwar Sadat at the Camp David Peace Accord. He had no problem getting myself and my sister "behind the scenes" at the White House to meet Nixon.

A few years later, he had started to move up the ladder into more of a managerial role, and he tried to get us to the Oval Office to meet Jimmy Carter. He had zero luck convincing any of the agents on duty to let us anywhere close -- and we were very nonthreatening teenagers. Those guys don't mess around.

We did get to sit in the Cabinet Room while he lobbied on our behalf, so that was cool.
