Obama's Legislative Achievements

Which of Obama's legislative achievements are your favorite? I'm talking about bills where he is regarded as a prime mover, not merely one he voted for, "worked for", or even lent his name as one of dozens of co-sponsors.

It has begun.

The campaign is cultish...
Obama has little legislative experience...
Blah, blah, blah.

If a monkey throws enough feces at a wall, some of it will stick. I'm curious to see what sticks. At this point, I don't have any idea what the anti-Obama cry will be.

Funny, this is the first time I've seen a thread started that asked this of any of the Presidential candidates whom are senators.
Let me guess McCain/Feingold must be your favorite of McCain's legislative achievements.

This is a point that I never quite understood. A good legislator does not equate to a good president. With governors, atleast there is some small comparison.

Legislators are like middle managers. They need to work the system and get things done. Presidents are like CEOs. They need to provide overall leadership and guidance. Different skill sets are required to succeed in these two areas.

I always felt that a presidency is all about a very select moments, like 9/11 and Iraq war for Bush. That's why you look for the character and the ability (intellectual and otherwise) of the person, when you chose a president.

I wasn't aware of Obama having any legislative achievements. Then again, if that were a bad thing, we probably would have elected a lot more Senators to be president.

I've seen the reference to the Congo legislation a couple of times now on this board. washpark, I see you referenced it just now. What are your thoughts about it ?

Nakedbongo-

I agree with everything you wrote regarding both candidates... except the Clinton draftdoger part. He would have found a way to dodge it, but his "High Number" kept him from having to do so. Lucky for him. (BTW, Bush dodged the draft as well by getting preferential treatment to do coke and hang out in Texas.)

Some will say this is irrelevent. I say it is relevent. He is running for a position of leadership and is attempting to run on a theme of change. Well looking at his legislative record he appears to not really be leading much of anything, and appears to be more of the same. Both of those show inaction in two areas that would be important based on his campaign. He is just another junior senator who has voted the liberal party line on legislation led by others. That doesn't mean he cannot be a good President, but it also certainly shows a lack of experience in leadership. It also shows he is not really trying to affect change in his current job. What makes me think this will change when he is Pres? Because he said so in his campaign? Sorry not going to fall for that.

There is no way that was an ad hominem attack.

The monkey throwing **** is a succinct description of what is going on. There is no shred of intellectual honesty in these posts. They are not questions or observations. They are intended to attack and/or persuade.

And if you want an honest answer (which is more than the disingenuous original intent deserves) here it is:

Obama is a freshman senator, who, from the moment he took office, knew that he would have a legit shot at being the D nominee for president in 08.

So, he INTENTIONALLY kept away from the legislative fray. Doing otherwise would saddle him with political baggage.

Anyone paying attention to politics in 2004 could have predicted that Obama would have a below-the-radar first 4 years in office.

Of course now the opposition is attempting to knock him for doing what any politician in his position would have done. This won't stick. Time to dig in and find something new to throw.

Hillary, on the other hand, jumped right into the fight as soon as she was elected. She already had political baggage and wanted to prove she could hang with the big boys.

Different strategies for an ascension to a more meaningful leadership position.

Obama did what any politician in his position would have done. It makes little sense to use that against him. I guess you could say that the effort to use that against him is...creepy.

Cheney was a draft dodger - service doesn't matter

Cheney dodged WW II? What are you talking about, isnt Cheney in his 70's, what draft did he avoid?

"Democratic Republic of the Congo Relief, Security, and Democracy Promotion Act."

Look for more money to go to Africa if he is elected president. i think i heard something about his grandmother having to travel 20 miles to watch super tuesday on a black and white TV in a hut....which brings up another question, why is he letting his grandmother watch TV in a disease infested, poverty stricken country when he is a front runner for the most powerful political office in the world...???
