Obama's Economy

Surely we can all agree that this is Obama's economy in the second term? Why is this frightening jobs report largely ignored? With the latest report, I think the true unemployment rate clicks in at over 11% when considering people who have simply given up.

The 88,000 net jobs added in March, if that or a similar figure holds up through revisions, is a tragedy: Nearly four years into the economic recovery, with the unemployment rate still close to 8 percent, the nation recorded a month in which too few jobs were added to keep up with the growing American workforce (that number is more like 125,000). The headline read that the unemployment rate fell to 7.6 percent from 7.7 percent, but it was almost entirely for bad reasons. A whopping 496,000 people dropped out of the labor force, and 206,000 fewer people reported having a job, meaning that the proportion of Americans currently working actually ticked down, not up.

Quick, someone on the left spin this away from his majesty!

Certainly Obama has some blame in this for not working out. However, just as the Gingrich Congress and the compromises it worked out with Bill Clinton had a helluva a lot to do with the Clinton economy, Congress and President in a mutually uncooperative stance is going to have to take some of the fall here. America's working class is getting crushed in a vice that includes foreign competition and corporations where increasing profits are not seen as a reason to raise compensation. Republicans in Congress aren't doing those folks any favors.

I'm not sure how going along with bad policy is doing anyone favors. This is the old argument "it's better to do ANYTHING rather than nothing". I disagree with that assertion.

'"Republicans in Congress aren't doing those folks any favors.

what in your opinion has the GOP done to " these folks" ? You realize the Senate and the executive are both Dems and I am not aware that the House can make any unilateral decisions.

The jobs report was a disaster, but the stock market barely noticed on Friday. Obama will blame it on the sequester, which he has already blamed on the Republicans. At some point the house of cards will collapse. but who knows when? I'd have thought it would have been months ago.

^^^. This. My dad taught school and then taught night school on M,T,Th. We didn't see him as much as we liked, but he had three kids and needed the money. I know there are lots of people today doing the same thing, but also lots who think they are entitled to a job and to a certain salary. As a teacher myself, I've seen too many kids throw away an education to feel sorry for them.

Haven't heard anything from the left related to the OP yet. This is now clearly Obama's economy, and the business recovery, while robust in some aspects, is clearly a flop insofar as jobs are concerned.

When I noted that Roger35 had posted a comment on this thread, I was hoping to see what explanation he could give on behalf of Obama - not so, just a tangential attack at AustinBat.

Wow Rog, you are one self-righteous piece of work. My family is filled with teachers and I think there are very few in the profession who would care as little for students as you seem to imply of AustinBat. They try very hard to instill a sense of value in education but, given the numbers and the amount of time they have, it doesn't compare to what a parent could and should do to instill that value of education.

So before you start attacking the teachers, put the responsibility where it belongs...the parents of the kids who think so little of education that they are throwing it away.

By digging in its heelson Health Care Reform, the GOP gave lobbyists and their pals opportunities to stuff Obamacare with all sorts of Corporate goodies that wouldn't have happened if the Democrats didn't have to implemnt it al by themselves. Hostility towards immigration reforms left undocumented laborers with no leverage and undercut U.S. natives competing with them for jobs.

You thinking that Democrats and Republicans aren't right an left aren't doing favors for Merk, Koch Bothers, Fannie, Freddy, Goldman Sachs .... ?
And when Congress creates an organization to keep financial organizations from competey raping low income customers which party used filibuster to render the organization powerless by refusing to confirm a leader?

I expected better from you
You of course are entitled to your own opinion but not your own facts.
1. By digging in its heelson Health Care Reform,
Digging in? You mean because pelosi and reid never gave any of the proposals out forth the courtesy of a vote?
Coburn, Price and remember Ryan" all offered proposals. There may have been more but I remember those.
Bo Pelosi didn't need the GOP to ram obamacare through so HOW did the GOP offering their own plans that got chitcanned show them " digging in"?
2.Hostility towards immigration reforms
Which Dem immigration plan offered borderl control before ANY talk of pathway to citizenship?
Hostile? common sense.
If our borders aren't as secure as they can be how can we begin to talk about immigration reform?

3.And when Congress creates an organization to keep financial organizations from competey raping low income customers which party used filibuster to render the organization powerless by refusing to confirm a leader?
I admit I have no idea what this is.

each party does have ideological differences and disagreements.
Interesting that you see the GOP airing their views and offering their plans as hostile.

Agree completely on entitled attitudes. It's a bad thing to feel that a certain quality of life, etc it owed to you. I'm afraid there's no going back. Once people get a taste of the government teat, how are you going to confince them to work for what the government tells tells them is owed to them.
