Obama/plagiarism

Question for discussion:
If Obama is seen as basically "just words", and those words aren't even his own, what is left?

If Hillary uses this properly, she may have something that can keep her alive the next 2 weeks. Her opponent, as his opponents like to say, is mere rhetoric, all hat no cattle, an empty suit, blah, blah...

Thoughts? I don't think this is that big of a deal, but I can see how a political opponent may use it to their advantage.

(Disclaimer: I don't really care which one of them wins the Primary, this is for discussion purposes, not a knock on Obama. More of a strategy discussion. Didn't want to ruffle the feathers of BO's supporters).

Both candidates have lifted words and rhetoric from other sources. I really don't see it as a big issue. Should the candidate have a projected footnote behind them citing all of their sources? Should they thank the Oxford English Dictionary after every speech for providing the words needed to deliver the speech?

If Hillary tries to use to somehow bring Obama down it will just end up hurting her cause in the end.

If you believe Obama is "just words", then you wouldn't be voting for him anyway. And did anybody think that he (or any other politician) gets no help from others in writing their speeches? Given that the person who originally said similar words is a close friend, who suggested Obama say it, this is such a non-issue. Clinton looks desperate trying to make this one.

Attacking Obama on something this trivial plays right into his hand. He is preaching to people who are SICK and tired of the crap that has gone on in elections/Washington for the last 16 years. We are sick of attack ads and BS like this.

"16 years? Joe Biden got run out of town on a rail for plagiarizing speeches."

I used 16 years to encompass Clinton/Bush. People are SICK of politics as usual. GO read the approval ratings of congress and the president. Hardly anyone is happy with what it going on in Washington. Nor have they been for a long time now.

Obama tapped into to the people who have either given up on politics or the people who are sick and tired of how the country has been run.... which is the VAST majority of the populous.

And I used a major plagiarism scandal with a candidate. Among my pet peeves is the idea that the idea that nasty politics emerged in recent times. Fortunately, there's about to be a movie version of McCullough's book on John Adams so that the people that are too stupid to read (i.e. those that believe that nasty politics is new) might learn something.

Also fortunate is that most people stupid enough to buy into Obama's tripe about "uniting the country" won't be able to figure out how to use their ballots.

Joe Biden issue was different - First he took part from various speeches, which were given by people he has no connection with. That by itself didn't cause much problem, as lot of people take inspirational passages. What did cause him problem was that it came out he plagiarized a legal article while in school and failed the course because of that.

So because politics have been nasty for 200 years, that somehow negates what people today feel about what has been going on in Washington? Yeah, keep reading there skippy, maybe you will figure it out someday.

The disenchanted voters have been there for the picking for decades now. But the parties run out retards like Bush/Kerry, Gore/Kerry, etc... We get junk like Swiftboaters and moveon.org.

to be fair though, repeating verbatim another's speech without crediting them (i.e. "My good friend, Gov. Jim Smith often says...") can be a bad thing. Obviously people borrow from speeches all the time, but typically it's "President Kennedy told us..." or similar.

It's not that big of a deal, but it doesn't have to be to have a negative affect on him.

You are wrong, this happens all the time. It is a non-issue. BO is the most talented individual (now that Romney is out) running for THE office... and for the desperate (HC), the seminary dropout duffers (MH) and senile hawks (JM) there isn't much to pick on. They liked his speeches and found a portion that they could fault. Nice work!

I love this. Basically we who support Obama are basically stupid, he's beyond criticism because he is black and Obama will have nothing substantive to say in this election, just words.

Just as I suspected. This is a non-issue. Hill and Bill are up to their old tricks... once again previewing for us what the next 4 years will be like if they get back in the White house.
"Senator Clinton knows full well that her campaign held a conference call with reporters to fan these flames and the fact that she suggested her campaign had nothing to do with it is exactly the kind of evasive tactic voters are rejecting."

I think the main thing here is what Patrick says. See the following para.

"Patrick, a friend and supporter of Obama, said he encouraged the candidate last week to respond to Clinton's criticisms about his rhetoric, as he has done before. He said he shared lines from his 2006 campaign for governor with Obama's speechwriters and wanted no credit, because the two men often swap ideas."
